Fallout From Bush's Tactical Nukes On The American West |

Bush's surreal atomic contradictions reflect the logic of Dr. Strangelove's generation: He wants to curtail nuclear proliferation by proliferating nukes, wants to minimize the threat of nuclear war by making nuclear weapons more practical to use and seems to be enforcing his international consensus against weapons of mass destruction in part by implicitly threatening to nuke the uncooperative. |

The House bill boasts 345 named co-sponsors, 170 of them Republicans. But when Rep. Jim Marshall, D-Ga., - whose district includes the Columbus-Fort Benning area with thousands of military retirees - initiated a Discharge Petition to bring the bill to the House floor for a vote, only one of the 170 Republican co-sponsors was willing to sign the petition.
The other 169 Republicans are missing in action, and the veterans say they know why. "Republican representatives are being forced to represent the White House," complains retired Air Force Lt. Col. B.E. Cushing, a Florida resident. He adds that the word is that the Republican leadership is "urging and even threatening" members to keep them from signing the Discharge Petition. |

Programs To Help Poor Nations Criticized |

The News-Gazette provided only a very truncated and imcomplete version of this story in today's (7/8/03) edition on page A-3. A complete and much more informative version is provided here, one that clearly calls for change in the present policies of the IMF and World Bank. Since the full version goes outside what the N-G finds to be politically acceptable in its myopic worldview (that is, uncritical support for Bush's foreign and economic policies), it was likely watered down to a benign synopsis by an editor at the N-G, instead of being reported on in its entirety, as it is here. |
