On January 1 the Zapatistas broke nearly two years of silence with an enormous march in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas. The Comandancia addressed a crowd overflowing the plaza.

This week's issue of The Nation (December 30, 2002) features one of the sickest ads I've seen in a long time. (I've heard that ads like this have been on TV sinc the last Superbowl, but since my wife and I killed our idiot box we've been spared the indignity.) Basically pot smokers are accused of supporting international terrorism. This is my response (which will probably NOT get printed in their "Letters" section.)
Speak up pot smokers! We have nothing to lose but our silence! |

Two years ago or so I spotted a full-page ad in the San Francisco Guardian. It read, "We're Jeff and Tracy. We're your good neighbors. We smoke pot." The ad detailed the difficulties this clean-cut Republican couple had getting their ad printed in liberal weeklies, and all they wanted to say was that lots of folks in the U.S. smoke pot and are also good neighbors and citizens. In other words, it was a call for a repeal on prohibition.

In the next few weeks the U.S. Supreme Court will decide whether or not to hear Nike's appeal of the California Supreme Court's decision that Nike was engaging in commercial speech which the state can regulate under truth in advertising and other laws. And lawyers for Nike are preparing to claim before the Supreme Court that, as a "person," this multinational corporation has a constitutional free-speech right to deceive. |
