United States Refuses to Abide by Geneva Convention

On January 11, 2002, the United States announced that it was refusing to abide by the 1949 Geneva Convention on the treatment of prisoners of war in its treatment and internment of those taken prisoner in Afghanistan or Pakistan by the United States. The Third Geneva Convention, which provides specific guidelines for treatment of prisoner combatants, is a part of the "law of nations" and is a mainstay of international humanitarian law. The United States explained that the prisoners were not actually prisoners of war, but were in fact "unlawful combatants."

In Total Disregard Toward the Poor

It should be pointed out that poor families in Illinois are taxed disproportionately. Many Illinois politicans make a career out of calling for tax cuts, but their schemes seem to have done nothing to change the high taxes on the poor in our state. This is a strong argument for paying living wages and limiting so-called economic development tax abatements to only those projects that include living wage requirements for the jobs created with tax dollars. Rubin Shouldn't Escape Enron Investigation

According to Treasury, Rubin wanted to know if the Bush administration was going to intervene with the big credit rating agencies, who were about to lower their rating of Enron's debt. Since Rubin's Citigroup was holding hundreds of millions of dollars worth of Enron's debt, it had quite a large stake in the outcome of any such decision.
