On January 28, Professor Fred Jaher of the U of I published a Guest Commentary in the News-Gazette casting anti-Semitic aspersions on local Presbyterian pastors for joining the larger church in promoting divestment from companies doing business with Israel. Included is his commentary, my submitted response, and a statement by Jewish Voice for Peace, a Bay Area-based organization that opposes Israeli policies and supports divestment. |

The story of James D. Guckert (a.k.a. Jeff Gannon) broke Jan. 26. It started as a blip of a controversy over a little-known "reporter" for a conservative website asking a kiss-up question at a White House briefing. Bloggers investigated "Gannon's" identity and found that he had little training in journalism and an apparent connection to male prostitution. Bloggers wanted to know how someone with this background had for two years received White House "day pass" press credentials. |

The spin doctors are having to work double overtime. A new presidential report to Congress admits that since the US invasion of Afghanistan, opium production that country has more than tripled. Thanks to our efforts, the West asian nation has almost achieved "narcotics state" status. Iraq, too, is increasingly out of (our) control. This we call "success," and it's spreading. |

In any case, what isn't in today's Times says a lot about what a sluggish, bureaucratic entity that newspaper has become, how much it rather consistently misses stories that need to be brought to light for the health of our democracy, and how little its coddling attitudes toward the centers of power in Washington have changed since Noam Chomsky began referring to the Times a number of years ago as part of the "business press" -- indeed, it appears that, since 9/11, they've actually gotten worse on national security issues. |
