Whatever your own views, in such circumstances one should hardly be surprised if a noticeable minority feels both the ruling parties have failed and deceived us and seeks refuge in a clear alternative. To excoriate the dissenters for their mere existence is further evidence of the political psychosis that has gripped us.

If America can put men on the moon, surely it can devise a presidential election system easier to understand than the theory of relativity or even Dubya’s “answers” at his last press conference. It’s time to close the old Electoral College and start a new institution: winner by direct majority vote.

''This is simply pandering to the right-wing mullahs of this country'', said New York Representative Carolyn Maloney, a veteran champion of UNFPA who earlier this year proposed that Bush earmark all UNFPA funds for its programs to help women with obstetric fistula, a particularly debilitating condition caused by untreated obstructed labor that affects million of women in poor countries.

''The world's neediest women and children are again paying the price for the president's re-election campaign to play to his far-right base,'' Maloney told the tele-conference.
