DC Begin Mass Arrests Of Prostestors Demonstrating Against The World Bank & IMF

Mainstream press reports that 300 - 500 protestors have been arrested in a pre-emptive strike by DC police to control the this weekend's protests against the annual meeting of the World Bank and Int'l Monetary Fund.

Reports to DC Indymedia indicate that the police have been agressive and violent, largely without provocation.

AWARE Mails 500 Postcards To Senators

AWARE (Anti-War Anti-Racism Group) set up tables on Monday and Tuesday. Outside of Strawberry Fields in Downtwon Urbana IL, activist provided stamped address postcard for citizens to mail an Anti -War message to their Senators. A total of more than 500 postcards were mailed by 7pm on Tuesday.

Activists Picket Local Taco Bell

On Sunday, September 22, over a dozen community activists took to the streets outside the Urbana Taco Bell to draw attention to labor injustices perpetuated by "the Bell." Farmworkers that pick Taco Bell tomatoes receive 1978 wages, no overtime, no health insurance, no sick leave, no paid holidays, and no pension.

Local Justice Groups Protest Wal-Mart's Discriminatory Practices

As part of a national effort by the National Organization for Women (NOW), the Champaign County chapter of NOW joined with local justice groups on Saturday September 21, 2002 to protest sex discrimination in wages, labor law violations, ADA violations, and the company's refusal to dispense Preven (the morning after pill for rape victims). The protest took place in front of the Champaign Wal-Mart off North Prospect Avenue.
