AWARE (Anti-War Anti-Racism Group) set up tables on Monday and Tuesday. Outside of Strawberry Fields in Downtwon Urbana IL, activist provided stamped address postcard for citizens to mail an Anti -War message to their Senators. A total of more than 500 postcards were mailed by 7pm on Tuesday.
Postcards were addressed to both Durbin and Fitzgerald. Durbin's office has reported that they had been besieged with calls overwhelmingly in opposition to the bill that will be before them later this week giving President select the right to use any and all means necessary for "regime change" in Iraq. It is reported that Durbin may be voting against the bill because of its wide sweeping language.
Those manning the table, during the beautiful early fall afternoon, where delighted with the response. Less than 20% did not want to fill out a postcard. Most wanted, not only to fill one out, but to thank those at the table for their effort and to offer solidarity to each other. There were the expected, "No, I want to bomb him." But they were few and far between. |
