On Sunday, September 22, over a dozen community activists took to the streets outside the Urbana Taco Bell to draw attention to labor injustices perpetuated by "the Bell." Farmworkers that pick Taco Bell tomatoes receive 1978 wages, no overtime, no health insurance, no sick leave, no paid holidays, and no pension. |

Florida farmworkers who pick tomatoes for the Immokalee-based "Six L's, Packing, Co., Inc.," one of the nation's largest tomato producers and a contractor for Taco Bell, are paid 40 cents for every 32-pound bucket they pick. At that rate, workers would have to haul 2 tons of tomatoes to make $50 in one day! Furthermore workers at the Six L's are denied the right to organize and the right to overtime pay for overtime work. They receive no health insurance, no sick leave, no paid holidays, no paid vacation, and no pension.
The workers have organized under the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) to put nationwide pressure on the Six L's. The CIW is asking Taco Bell to pay just one penny more per pound for the tomatoes it buys from Six L's. Taco Bell is in a unique position to influence this situation but has refused to take any responsibility. CIW has called for a nationwide boycott of Taco Bell to pressure them in to reconsidering.
The Sunday action was sponsored by a variety of local labor, religious, and activist organizations. For more information view www.ciw-online.org. #file_4# |
