Media and the Election |

When we look at the media's role in the 2004 election, we make a mistake to focus on election coverage per se. The basis for Bush's victory was in place way before 2004. At the end of last year, a huge study done by the University of Maryland's PIPA, the Program on International Policy Attitudes, found that most of those who got their news from the commercial TV networks held at least 1 of 3 fundamental "misperceptions" about the war in Iraq (and some held 2 or 3 of them):
* that Iraq had been directly linked to 9/11
* that WMDs had been found in Iraq
* that world opinion supported the U.S. invasion of Iraq.
These are faith-based voters -- not fact-based voters. |

Greenspan Hits the Trifecta: Dollar's Decline Inevitable |
by Mark Weisbrot (No verified email address) |

Both the Clinton and Bush administrations have officially embraced a policy of maintaining a "strong dollar." This sounds very nice but is comparable to a doctor pursuing a "strong influenza virus" policy for his patients. |

by Randall Cotton recotton (nospam) earthlink.net (unverified) |
Current rating: 0 22 Nov 2004

Don't forget, the (hopefully final) push in the effort to get "Democracy Now!" broadcasts going on UPTV (cable channel 6) happens TONIGHT, 7:30PM at the Urbana City Council Chambers, ground floor of the Urbana City building, 400 S. Vine St (across from Lincoln Square Mall). It seems the mayor has a suprise or two up his sleeve - MASSIVE public turnout is essential to trump any efforts to thwart or blunt the resolution. |

[The dollar's slide continues, oil prices are rising again, and the G20 isn't going to get involved. This makes raising the deficit ceiling seem like exactly the wrong move. Forget moral values, the real values are U.S. exports, which are getting cheaper all the time. It's all starting to feel very Argentinian. It's probably not too late to buy lots of Euros and store them in your mattress ... -- JF] |
