This morning, Phil Hare fielded questions on issues at the Visitors Center in Galesburg, Illinois and showed his support for former mayor Bob Sheehan in his race for the Sate Senate. here are some pictures of the event.. |
One of the interesting things Phil noted in Washington this year was the low turnout and light schedule for congressmen. Attendance is the lowest since 1948, and this session of congress lasts only 76 days - of 365, and in spite of this, the US Representatives voted themselves 31,000 dollars in raises over the last 9 years. Phil says he doesn't want the extra money - he wants to change things. he'd like to get working on health care legislation that is comprehensible to the layman, and protect social security from plans for the privatization that the republicans cherish. He'd also like to make sure we properly protect out troops in Iraq while we plan their exit from Iraq, instead of remaining mired in an ill-concieved war while cutting back out civil liberties at home.
Phil also spoke about the need to enforce corporate responsibility, which is an issue close to home in Galesburg, Illinois, where Bob Sheehan was Mayor when the Maytag plant pulled up stakes. Unbeknowst to anyone at the time, this was part of a long term plan to pare down the company and sell it to Whirlpool, a deal which has been recently consumated. Sheehan and Hare both look forward to new avenues of economic develpoment for the state, which would include federal incentives for the use of ethanol and biodiesel.
