In a letter sent to news media today, Champaign City Attorney Steve Carter and Champaign Police Chief RT Finney ask Champaign County State's Attorney John Piland to drop eavesdropping charges against Martel Miller and Patrick Thompson.
Mr. Miller and Mr. Thompson have been video and audio taping Champaign, Urbana and campus police interactions of residents since early summer for an organization they co-founded called, VEYA, Visionaries Educating Youth and Adults.

Satterthwaite's Smokescreen: Charge Others With What You Actually Are Up To |

Urbana Mayor Tod Satterthwaite and City Councilmember, Milton Otto, have been slinging charges of "ethics" violations against the mayor's political opponents on the city council. A closer look at these recent bizarre attacks on members of their own party in Urbana reveals that it is a cover up for their own questionable ethics, most notably the back room maneuvering to grant Wal Mart control over Urbana's Comprehensive Plan. |

ACLU Statement on Martel Miller Eavesdropping Charges |

|
This afternoon there was a press conference held at the Champaign Public LIbrary featuring statements from the Iliinois and Champaign Urbana branches of the American Civil Liberties Union and other community orgnizations on the recent charges of criminal eavesdropping made against two Champaign men, including Martel Miller. Miller was charged as a result of videotaping police conduct on public streets as part of a citizen watch effort of the organization he co-founded, Visionaries for Educating Youth and Adults (VEYA).
The statement of the Illinois ACLU is below.
Video footage recorded by VEYA is available at their website (http://www.veya.org/) and will be shown Saturday September 11th in the auditorium of the Champaign Public Library and again at 1pm on Sunday, September 12th at Boardman's Art Theatre in downtown Champaign.
Audio from the press conference, along with an interview with VEYA member Nicole Lamers, will air on WEFT 90.1's mediageek at 5:30 PM on Friday, Sept. 10. The program will be archived on-line at: http://www.mediageek.org/radioshow |

Looming Censorship of “Democracy Now!” by Urbana Mayor and How You Can Stop It (audio clips included) |
by Randall Cotton Email: recotton (nospam) earthlink.net |

NEW POSTING: AUDIO CLIPS INCLUDED
This is the story of how Urbana Mayor Todd Satterthwaite is personally obstructing the widely-supported effort to get “Democracy Now!” broadcast on Urbana Public Television (UPTV). You don’t think that could be happening? I don’t blame you. I was pretty surprised myself. But I challenge you to read this article (which contains audio clips of the most recent UPTV Commission meeting) and not come away with certainty that the mayor is personally attempting to prevent “Democracy Now!” from being shown on UPTV. He may think he can get away with censorship of “Democracy Now!”, but he won’t if YOU act to oppose it by attending the next UPTV Commission meeting at noon on Monday, September 13th in the City Council Chambers (largest room on the ground floor) at the City of Urbana Building, 400 S. Vine St. in Urbana. |
