Jail Phones, Next Move |
by Sandra Ahten Email: spiritofsandra (nospam) hotmail.com |

|
All jail inmate calls from the county jail, even local calls must be placed as collect calls. The charges for these calls is highly inflated from what would normally be charged for collect calls. The telephone company, who has an exclusive contract with Champaign County then kicks back $14,000 each month to the County. CU Citizens for Peace and Justice is advocating for change by asking caring community members to speak out at the County Board meeting this Thursday, Jan. 20 at 7pm. |

ADMINSTRATOR FAILS TO BRING INMATE PHONE CONTRACT TO COUNTY BOARD |
by Sandra Ahten Email: spiritofsandra (nospam) hotmail.com |
09 Jan 2005
|
Champaign County gets a kickback of more than $14000 per month from the company that provides inmate jail phone services. Denny Inman, a Champaign County Adminstrator failed to bring the phone contract before the board in a timely manner. Whether the timing was calculated or inadvertent, the result is that some members of the finance committee seem to be resigned to renewing the present phone contract because there is not adequate time to put the contract out for bid. |
