Radio Free Urbana Fundraiser Benefit Concert
Thursday, Jan, 20 @ Canopy Club
$5 * Doors open at 8:30 PM

Radio Free Urbana is a new non-profit community radio station that will double the amount of airtime dedicated to local programming independent of a corporate agenda.

RFU needs to raise $5000 -- HOLD THE PRESSES -- Now, due to several recent donations, RFU only needs to raise another $2,500!!! -- in order to build the station and be on the air by June 2005.

Contact rfu (at) lists.chambana.net to find out how you can become the media!

"WRFU - coming to you June 2005 at 104.5 FM Urbana, Illinois"
And after the benefit (or even before)...
What to do if RFU is for you?

More info
Here's lots of info on how to get involved and help put RFU on the air with YOUR programming...

This is a reminder about the WRFU meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 18 at 8 pm at the IMC. We're only $2,500 away from raising the $10,000 we need to get on the air and there's lots going on that's important. Please come on down and help us in the final push to putting WRFU on the air by June.

Here's some agenda items, but more are invited. I have tried to be specific about some tasks in case people cannot make Tuesday's meeting but can help later in the week.

Jan. 20 WRFU benefit at the Canopy Club
Lynsee has done an amazing job of getting this benefit organized and getting the word out about this great event for WRFU at the Canopy Club. There is some last minute publicity in the form of handing out flyers on the Quad on Wed. and Thur. It's supposed to be warmer then, so can anybody help with this?

We need people at the RFU benefit to staff a booth, pitch WRFU a little between groups, and generally connect with the public and potential volunteers. The doors open at 8:30 pm and it lasts until 2pm. We especially need a couple of people to help set up the both and staff the first hour or so. Several of us have to be at the IMC Steering meeting that will probably will not end until after 9pm. The second shift should be at the Canopy Club by about 9:30 and can take over staffing at that point, but at least one person to work the RFU table from 8:30 - ~9:30pm would be great.

Fundraising
We have a Feature article on UC IMC coming, but are just waiting on getting the Paypal button done to post it. We have raised $3,200 dollars since December -- which is why we are only $2,500 away from meeting our $10,000 goal -- but we also need to do a SMALL mailing to people very likely to give more.

If we can exceed our goal of $10,000 by March 31, then we can go with some better studio equipment than we anticipated having within this $10,000 budget. This is a good reason for those interested more in doing programing than building a radio station to get involved now -- the studio gear we use will all be icing on the cake (the basic radio station/transmitter) that we are getting ready to build. If you want the nice mikes, turntables, pro CD decks, etc, then we are going to need to raise some funds for that in addition to the first $10,000. How much? Well, I can tell you there is money laying in the streets that we can point you to -- but those of us working on the project so far have our hands full with getting WRFU on the air. And good studio gear isn't cheap. So if that's what you are wanting to use when we start broadcasting, then SOMEBODY has to go pick up the change that is out there jingling around. That person could be you! Come to the meeting and find out how easy it will be.

PROGRAMMING
Fundraising and building a station is not everyone's cup of tea. There are lots of people that have expressed an interest in WRFU that are only interested in DJing -- and that's totally cool. Well, guess what? It's time to start coming to meetings with your ideas and getting organized.

There is an overall coordinating plan for doing programming, but it needs some program proposals and people to statt talking about what programs will go where and when. WRFU programming is up to YOU! With broadcasting set to begin no later than June, there really is not that much time to figure who gets which slots, work on your program ideas, and organize things for when we go live.

One thing will certainly be true... Those who show up first and get programming organized are also those with first choice of the prime time slots. If you already envision your show as being just right for all your homies between 8 and 9 pm on Tuesdays, then you want to be at WRFU meetings to say, "Hey, I want that slot!"

The initial pool of programming groups will decide among themselves how to divvy things up and those who come later...well, there will be time available, but only what others passed over on their first choice. That will work for most people, but if you have a particular time you want most, keep this in mind. We welcome your attendance and participation at any WRFU meeting.

The Super Sound Board
Donated to RFU by a very generous community radio activist, WRFU does have one magnificent piece of studio gear already -- a 72-channel main board. More than adequate for WRFU needs, no matter how many decks we're ever likely to fit into a studio, this board will also allow us to eventually do live show production over the air.

The catch is that the board is near Monticello, but the ground is now frozen enough to get to where it's stored. We could use a couple of volunteers willing and able to do some lifting. We could also use a full size pickup to haul it back to Urbana to be stored until WRFU goes on the air. If you can help with any of this in the next week, please reply to the RFU list and let us know.

In fact, if there is anything YOU would like to help with and can't make the regular Tuesday meetings, please send an email to rfu (no spam) lists.chambana.net or join the list at http://lists.chambana.net/cgi-bin/listinfo/rfu

WRFU is a volunteer station and will be what those who get involved make it. We have very few preconceptions about what WRFU should be beyond offering service to the community in getting out diverse news, views and arts programming. Bring your ideas and come out to any WRFU meeting, which are every first and third Tuesday of the month at 8 pm at the UC IMC, 218 West Main St., Urbana.

Benefit a Success, Fund Drive Moving Forward
Current rating: 0
21 Jan 2005
Just a quick report that the Canopy Club benefit was a great success. We exceeded our target attendance (100+), got what we are doing out in front of the public, and had a great time.

Lynsee did a great job in organizing this event. Everyone be sure to thank her next time they see her, because she is talking about doing it again! Thanks also go to Jay Goldberg and the Canopy Club team for hosting, to the great bands that volunteered their art in the service of community, to Paul R., John A., and Maiko for staffing the booth, to Nanci for painting a cool WRFU banner, all those who helped Lynsee with publicity, and to everyone that came out for a good cause -- Radio Free Urbana!

Also, Paul K., along with the rest of Darrin Drda's Theory of Everything, recorded what will eventually be WRFU's first jingle. Thanks! That means we are a real station, just waiting on a transmitter...and with the fund drive moving forward, it won't be long now.

We are awaiting the final figures, but with several recent donations, I can safely say that Radio Free Urbana is less than $2,000 away from meeting the overall goal of raising $10,000 by March 31. Maiko took a bunch of pictures and when they get posted, I'll do an updated Feature article to keep the momentum going.

WRFU...Pirate community radio, without the P.
Thank You, Everyone!

Final figures on what we raised last night are $493.25! Added to other recent donations, we only need to raise another $1850 or so to make our $10,000 goal for the RFU startup budget.

Watch UC IMC for a way to contribute online via Paypal, coming soon!

And don't forget that direct donations to the RFU Fund are tax deductible to the extent provided by law. Checks should be made out to "UC IMC" with "WRFU Fund" clearly marked in the memo section. The address is:
UC IMC Attn: WRFU
218 West Main St., Suite 110
Urbana, IL 61801

Thanks again to everyone who worked hard to make this a success and to those who came out on a snowy night to enjoy the great bands at the generous Canopy Club!
