National Report Highlights Champaign County Consumers? Experiences with Medical Debt

New report describes dire financial consequences of involuntary medical debt

Report to be released nationally and locally on March 5th, 2003

Interviews with individuals, social service providers, and health care providers in three communities found that the effects of medical debt include restricted access to health care, damaged credit status, and even financial ruin. Consumers with medical debt were deterred from seeking needed medical care. Medical debt made it harder to achieve self-sufficiency, to get a bank loan and other lines of credit, to save money, or to pay for basic goods and services.

The report, The Consequences of Medical Debt: Evidence from Three Communities is being released by The Access Project, a resource center affiliated with Brandeis University, in conjunction with three community partners ? Champaign County Health Care Consumers (Champaign, IL), Human Service Coalition of Dade County (Miami, FL), and Tenants & Workers Support Community (Alexandria, VA). Interviews were conducted in three communities: Champaign, IL, Miami, FL and Alexandria, VA.

A local press conference will be held by the Champaign County Health Care Consumers to discuss findings from the report and to announce local policy recommendations. Hard copies of the report will also be available at the press conference.

Congratulations to CCHCC for its report on the national problem of medical debt.

As a health policy researcher I cannot think of a better organization other than the Champaign County Health Care Consumers that is able to speak to this issue and to bring it to the attention of the broader public and policy makers.

Best wishes and good luck with your press conference.

Congratulations again.

Keep up the great work.
