Numbering around 60 people, community members and EIU Students held marches originating from different points and converging at Old Main today March 1 at Noon. The marches, rally and protests were to draw public awareness to the opposition to the possibity of a pre-emptive war against IRAQ! |
At the rally several speakers voiced their opposition to war, concern for the reduction of civil liberties, and called for a focus on justice instead of death and destruction.
Several counter-protesters joined the group and contemplated taking over the microphone. They were suprised
when anti-war protesters joined hands with them during
part of the rally. Those driving by in cars gave various
responses to the no-war signs. These included honks of
encouragement as well as admonitions to "nuke them all" and
to "go home".
Overall it was a precedent setting event as a radical force
for peace with justice emerged from the sleepy Charleston
and Mattoon Communities. This march originated from Coles County residents who participated in the Fellowship of Reconciliation's training in Champaign-Urbana just one week ago.
Protestors will continue to vigil each Monday at 5pm in
front of Old Main in Charleston.
Spread the peace! You never know what spark your
small act of resistance will ignite!

Glad to see that out of a fairly good size college campus, that there are a relatively small percentage of American Hating, Historically Uniformed, Pot Smoking, Nutbags who have a tremendous amount of time on their hands.
Peace Through Strength,

Bringing attention to the issues involving the U.S. abroad and relating those issues to small commmunities such as Charleston is important in illustratiing the whole reality of cause and effect of our ( U.S. ) actions in the world economy and politics to that community, and showing how these actions will affect us "at home". What this group of people is doing is equally, if not more crucial to the dissemination of information and initiation of dialogue than even the actions in larger communities where, because of a larger number of supporters,it is sometimes a more comfortable, perhaps easier environment in which to dicuss issues that are not consistent with mainstream mindset, ignorance, or misinformation. Congratulations to them. I look forward to watching as these "sleepy communities wake up" and join in speaking out against organized and goverment subsidized terror of vulnerable foreign parties by the U.S. and in speaking up in voicing there concern about diminishing civil liberties and preserving those rights. Indy media is a key factor in that voice and I am happy to see its growth in supporters as well.
Thank You,
S- Brooklyn, NY |

Hey S, your welcome. By the way, these sleepy little communities should go back to bed.

LD class learns about the outdoors. Teacher allows kids to walk around without Bicycle Helmets if they promise to be really careful. A good time was had by all but little was accomplished. |
