Praise to State Senator John Cullerton who has introduced SB0071 that would ban “canned hunts” on all mammals except deer in Illinois.
Canned shoots consist of the cowardly practice of killing captive animals on enclosed property. People pay large fees for a guaranteed kill. Many of these animals, exotics or native wildlife, are originally purchased from establishments such as zoos or game farms.
The animals are familiar with people so they do not show the natural tendency to flee from humans; they become tame targets.
In addition, baiting and confining the animals in fenced areas guarantees the "hunters" a kill.
The increased number of animals in the confined space of a canned hunt has many pro-hunting individuals and agencies concerned about the possibility that diseases like Chronic Wasting Disease may more easily spread to nearby native animal populations.
This is an opportunity for diverse groups to take a stand together to end a cruel and dangerous industry. Eleven states have already prohibited canned shoots.
Illinois should be next.
