State Line, Mississippi was hit by Katrina-related tornadoes, but has received little or no federal aid yet. |

Champaign County residents gave generously to a grassroots food drive to help residents of rural Mississippi who had been affected by tornadoes from Katrina, but who had received little federal assistance. On Friday, September 18, Maurice Jake drove an 18-wheeler loaded with an estimated 27000 pounds of food and medical/sanitary supplies down to State Line, MS. Carol Ammons, one of the organizers, and I rode along. We were positively impressed by most of the people we encountered. The devastation from Katrina had exacerbated the high poverty and unemployment rates, but despite the suffering, leaders and volunteers worked hard to distribute the goods quickly and fairly to members of the community. |

Keep up the good work, wayward. This drive looks like it was a community-building success, both there and here.
The world needs more people like you who know what "selfless service" means.
Let us all be sure not to forget those in need of assistance due to natural disaster when the headlines do. Sustainment of service and goodwill is key until those left helpless through no fault of their own are able to again sustain themselves.
Please pass on my salute to those who worked to make this happen. |

Thanks, but the community organizers like Carol and Aaron Ammons and many others deserve far more credit than I do. Maurice Jake had to do all the driving since he was the only one with the proper license, and he did a great job. I contributed a little, but was mostly there as the Indy Media photographer. |

Then, by all means, Maurice, Carol and Aaron and so many others deserve my salute.
But you, Wayward, whoever you are, deserve a salute as well. Providing publicity of those in true need with an imperceptible level of political commentary (on an IMC site, no less) is most certainly an honorable character trait. Don't shortchange yourself.
I may not like much of the content on this site, but I truly believe that IMC members and the majority of progressive activists have their hearts in the right place - even though I usually disagree with the means.
This particular instance of activism is bare-bones caring for fellow Americans: both the IMC coverage and the benefit effort itself.
Getting screwed by something on the scale of Katrina sucks. No one living on the Gulf Coast asked for this through their own action or inaction. This is the enbodiment of "shit happens."
That caring civilians who have no ties to that region and no persuading reason would 'pick up the colors' and 'continue mission' or "Charlie Mike" as we say, is admirable.
I'll be repatriating from active duty training status with the Champaign National Guard unit soon. If they're still in LA at that time, I'll be joining them. If I have net access at the time I get there, I'll be looking for you, for both of our sakes.
A side note: it would be a great first step for people like myself and yourself to learn to bridge the gap between right and left. Like the IMC concept, I believe that a bottom-up approach is the most solid method to building consensus, a fundimental democratic precept.
Enough drivel.
I still salute you. |
