Anti-War Demos Double on Main Street |

Monthly demonstrations against US wars and occupations have increased to two: one on the first Saturday of every month from 2-4 pm, and one on the third Saturday of every month from 6-8 pm. |
(Champaign) The Anti-War Anti-Racism Effort (AWARE) recently decided to double its monthly presence at the new One Main Plaza in downtown Champaign. The new venue replaces regular protests that occurred for three years in the business district on Prospect Avenue.
"Prospect for Peace" had been every Saturday for the most intense weeks of the invasion of Iraq, at times drawing over 300 participants plus up to 200 pro-war demonstrators.
But the new venue on Main Street is more inviting and offers a chance to reach a new audience, people who never go to Prospect on Saturdays. AWARE tried out the location in March for its anniversary commemoration of the start of war in Iraq, then subsequently decided to move "Prospect for Peace" downtown.
The new location has worked so well, attracting new participants as well as passers-by, that the group recently decided to hold another monthly demo there at a different time, to catch the eye of even more folks.
It's even child-friendly now.
The response, too, has been excellent so far, and the group has decided to continue the twice-monthly schedule unitl further notice.
Here's the schedule:
First Saturday of every month, 2-4 pm.
Third Saturday of the month, 6-8 pm.
All are welcome and encouraged to attend. Participants may bring thier own favorite sign or borrow one. |

Is downtown Champaign really the best place to make people aware that more and more people are pissed at the gummit? Wouldn't you expect most people frequenting downtown Champaign to already be fairly enlightened? Have other, more un-aware-ish places been considered where one might not be preaching to the choir?
