MIDWEST WOMEN LIE NAKED IN THE SNOW FOR PEACE |

Champaign-Urbana, IL - 26 January 2003 - A group of women from central Illinois felt compelled to use the shock of their naked bodies to send a message to the world that the women of America's heartland oppose a US-led war against Iraq. Rather than staying warm at home, they went out into below-freezing temperatures to be vulnerable for peace. Lying on a freshly snow-covered ground with sub-zero wind chills, they linked together to form the word "PEACE."

This photo marks the 9th photo contribution in a spontaneous series that began as a pro-peace demonstration staged on November 12th by a Baring Witness group from Marin County California. On that first action, 46 women posed naked in the word "PEACE", a second event grew to 96 women in late December and was accompanied by a concurrent group of 24 men who also staged a pro-peace protest by forming a peace symbol with their naked bodies.
This startling form of protest has inspired people all over the world to stage similar protests against war. From Salt Lake City, Utah to McCurdo Station, Antarctica and from Gainesville, Florida to East Sussex, England - the international spelling bee is spelling out the pro-peace message with their bodies.
PEACE - it's such a simple word, but it has so many connotations in the current political climate. "You're either with us or against us" has become national rhetoric, and so, it takes a certain amount of courage to speak out against war these days. For a group of middle-American scientists, teachers, home-makers, librarians, journalists, entrepreneurs, mothers and students ranging in age from 20-62 to act out publicly, stripped of clothing in the winter cold takes even more courage.

jeesh thats awful. thank God i save the whales cause these need to be put back in the ocean. that accomplishes and proves absolutely nothing or helps to the "cause". get into politics to make a change and stop doing idiotic stunts like this that do nothing but waste our time and make us sick from the sight of such pigs wallowing in the snow. peace can only come about by action. and those actions do nothing to bring it about. |

This is a great program! Before I saw the naked protestors, I was for the war and now I hate all war. The naked ladies did it. What a wonderful organization and movement!

So far, not many things that I've seen in life have made me wish I was insane. In fact, this may be the first time that I felt like I WANTED to become schizophrenic, in order to have some sort of justification for the atrocities against humanity I feel like comitting.
It's too bad these women weren't thin and attractive; in that case, someone may have actually given a shit about what they're doing. But I guess they need all that blubber to stay alive and warm in the "freezing" cold.
As it is, this "demonstration" is like pissing your name in the snow in the backyard of your geriatric neighbors who made you pay for the window of theirs that you accidentally broke with your baseball when you were 11, and calling it a call for social equality. |

for those who chose to discourage these women and their desire to generate change, i suppose i could succomb to frustrated defensiveness with comments like, "youre torturedly negative tones would go well with the howling in hell. and your war will get you there that much faster. i am very sorry for you." but i cant let myself go there. there is no healing or positive reinforcement in words like those. yes, i support a strength and consistency in what you support. however, those angry responses are no more constructive than a nuclear explosion in the civilian villages of a poor and depressed part of the world.....or any explosion for that matter.
my request is that we will think before we speak, and that sensitivity will never be discarded.

Delighted to see that so many people are tolerant and thoughtful in their comments and beliefs. Because everyone knows that we must all be tiny and thin to get approval from the masses.
Honestly, you'd think that there would at least be some maturity as you get older. I think what these women are doing great, they're opening themselves up for something they fully believe in.
America is immersed in a culture that teaches that sex and nudity are evil and shameful things. The fact that these women have risen above that and dared to think for themselves is a commendable thing.
Some of us step outside of the boundaries forced upon us by our shallow unthinking culture and actually learn something.

I don't know if this baring it all is right or wrong. I do know that I love naked women and clothed women as well. I would like to see how many of our brave solders would or could do the same. killing can be easier. There are alot of things women have to do that men do not have the stomach for. they never get medals for them. The young boys that will die in this war and past wars should not be the property of the governments to dispose of after their mothers raised them for 18 years. They train them in boot camp for three months but the mothers trained them longer.I am not a feminist and I believe in fathers rights. The Governments think they own our children. I respect women and believe they should be protected not sent to war. The media has now created a system that women have more credibility than men which is wrong. I don't care for a feminist Liberal society. I do believe at the same time that these women are doing good with that popularity that they have now. So I take my hat off to them. We need good stong women like these to raise good healthy hederal sexual sons and daughters to stand up for our country and to respect men and turn off the television and not be brain washed and not divorce their husbands which is the plan of the New world Order. (Divide and conquor) There are good respectable women who would never take off their clothes because they are good Christian women who don't stand up for nothing because their biggest fear is what others may think. They don't care who gets killed or what happens. They want to make sure that they are safe and respectable and fit in with society. Alot of so called respectable people are willing to kill instead of being naked because it is't sinfull to them. I would like to hear comments from some of them. I wish we would all show some guts and protest this Zionest world controll and take our country back. I wish we all would not go to work for a whole month and show up at the local State Capital and Demand we get out of United Nations and march and go on strike and make America stop in her tracts starting on July 4th to August 4th every year from now I very seldom meet women that give a damn about politics and are not brain washed. Women cannot stand to hear about the world conspiracy. So many cannot stand a real man who has guts. Considering this it is refreshing to see that their are women out there that are alot braver than me. I Love women with guts, not wussy women or male hatters but lovers of what is right. If some did it because they love to flash then I'm not impressed for the cause. If the rest had to grin and bare it just because they had guts we'll then God Bless them and I hope they got good and warm afterwards. |

What a ridiculous exercise. They are clearly members of the radical left wing that seems to like to do dramatic, art-inspired but devoid of meaning stunts. I mean, come on; at least try to give some arguements as to why we should not be at war with Iraq. I am willing to listen to arguments backed by fact. Looking at spoiled, bored and naked university women with nothing better to do (like studying or doing research or getting a job?), in light of the thousands of American who are in the middle east fighting and risking their lives, is a bit insulting and not a small bit humerous. Yes, as Americans we feel the need, and in fact have the obligation, to protect the right of these nuts to express their views as they see fit. I just hope the rest of America recognized what kooks that these people are. |

This was an amazing protest. However, while I see nothing wrong in stripping naked to make the point, surely you all took risks with your health; such extreme exposure as that could quite easily provoke a heart attack. Also, how did the photographer get such a clear (i.e. non-fuzzy) picture when you must all have been shivering violently? |

This works in Africa because it is WRONG to see a naked woman in public. It fails here coz it is generally encouraged (internet movies beaches fashion etc..) In the west for women to tend to nudity so this may not havebeen as effective as wanted. |
