ISRAELI SETTLERS BREAK THE ARMS 68 YEAR OLD WOMAN PEACE ACTIVIST Current rating: -1

"Brave Little Israel's" settlers break both arms of 68 year old woman Peace Activist and the ribs of 74 year old woman Peace Activist and injure others.

Settlers injure five people in attack on olive-pickers

By Arnon Regular, Ha'aretz Correspondent, Ha'aretz Service and Agencies

Five people were injured Sunday, when settlers from Itamar attacked peace activists and Palestinian olive-pickers from the nearby village of Yinon.

A group of armed settlers left the settlement of Itamar and headed toward an olive grove, where local residents, aided by peace activists from Israel and the United States, were harvesting the crop of olives.

The settlers, numbering between five and seven, pelted the olive-pickers and activists with stones, and beat them using their guns. The injured were taken to a private clinic in the nearby village of Akrava.

A Palestinian couple and their two children and four activists were treated in hospital for injuries including deep cuts and bruises, Yanoun Mayor Abdel Atif Isbeih said.

A statement issued by the International Solidarity Movement peace group said James Deleplain, a 74-year-old American, had a broken rib and Mary Hughes-Thompson, 68, a dual American-British citizen, had both arms broken.

Rabbi Arik Ascherman, executive director of Rabbis for Human Rights, said the settlers had "exploited" the Ariel blast as a pretext to resume violence to ruin Yanoun's farmers financially and drive them out.

Security forces did not arrive on the scene to investigate.

On Friday, a settler from the settlement of Eli fired shots over the heads of Palestinian olive pickers and peace activists, on the outskirts of the West Bank village of Issawiya.

The settler, who was being questioned by police over the incident, said that he fired the shots after seeing a Palestinian man, accompanied by a left-wing activist who was helping to pick the village's crop of olives, approach the perimeter fence around Eli.

The activists and the settlers have both filed complaints against each other, but a preliminary police investigation suggests that the olive pickers were within the boundaries of the grove, in an area where picking is permitted.

Last week, dozens of settlers attacked West Bank villagers and prevented them from picking their olives by firing guns toward the Palestinians and dozens of peace activists who had thronged to support them

There Goes DAN Again.

As usual, DAN takes a mainstream story, changes it around, and kinda sorta forgets to inform the reader of those changes. Here's just a paragraph to compare pre-DAN and post-DAN:

DAN version, as posted above: "A statement issued by the International Solidarity Movement peace group said James Deleplain, a 74-year-old American, had a broken rib and Mary Hughes-Thompson, 68, a dual American-British citizen, had both arms broken."

Actual version: "A statement issued by the International Solidarity Movement peace group said James Deleplain, a 74-year-old American, had a possible broken rib and Mary Hughes-Thompson, 68, a dual American-British citizen, may have had both arms broken."

And, of course, DAN screams a headline supporting his changed version, not the original. But if he told the _real_ truth, then he wouldn't be DAN, now would he?

Here's the whole text of the pre-DAN-ified story, if you're curious.

----

"Five people were injured yesterday when settlers from Itamar attacked peace activists and Palestinian olive-pickers from the nearby village of Yanoun, located about six miles east of Ariel in the West Bank.

In what appeared to be a response to the suicide bombing in Ariel, a group of armed settlers left the settlement of Itamar and headed toward an olive grove, where local residents, aided by peace activists from Israel and the United States, were harvesting the crop of olives.

About 10 settlers pelted the olive-pickers and activists with stones, and beat them using their guns. The injured were taken to a private clinic in the nearby village of Aqraba.

A Palestinian couple and their two children and four activists were treated in hospital for injuries including deep cuts and bruises, Yanoun Mayor Abdel Atif Isbeih said.

Isbeih told Reuters by telephone he had reported the attack to the Israeli army which controls the area and a jeep arrived, prompting the 10 settlers to retreat to nearby hills. No arrests were reported. The Israeli army and police had no immediate information.

A statement issued by the International Solidarity Movement peace group said James Deleplain, a 74-year-old American, had a possible broken rib and Mary Hughes-Thompson, 68, a dual American-British citizen, may have had both arms broken.

Rabbi Arik Ascherman, executive director of Rabbis for Human Rights, said the settlers had "exploited" the Ariel blast as a pretext to resume violence to ruin Yanoun's farmers financially and drive them out.

Almost all of the 150 villagers of Yanoun fled to a nearby town last week after settlers torched its electricity generator, overturned its water tanks and vandalized some homes. Most returned with peace activists a few days later.

Israeli and foreign activists opposed to Israel's occupation of the West Bank are trying to help Palestinians harvest their olives in hopes of discouraging attacks by settlers. "This morning we went with the Palestinians up above Yanoun to help them resume the harvest. When we heard of the attack in Ariel, we decided to leave for fear of a lynch from settlers," said Omer Allon of the Jewish-Arab peace group Ta'ayush.

"Although we were on our way back, young settlers attacked us from behind with rifle butts and stones. They beat the two Americans as they lay on the ground," Allon told Reuters by telephone from the hospital in Aqraba.

"They took the American lady's bag with her money and flight tickets. They threatened to kill us, but we made it back to Yanoun and they did not follow us... The world needs to know how bad life is getting for Palestinians here - they are attacked every day and no one does anything about it. Maybe if Americans are attacked, though, it will be more interesting for the world."

Gideon Alon adds:

At the cabinet meeting yesterday morning, Defense Minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer said he was very troubled by the wave of harassment that threatens the livelihood of tens of thousands of Palestinian families. He called on Public Security Minister Uzi Landau and Attorney General Elyakim Rubinstein to take action to stop this trend of lawlessness against Palestinian olive pickers."

Leading Israeli authors help Palestinians harvest olives

By DPA

Jerusalem - Reacting to attempts by Israeli settlers to harass Palestinian olive pickers, bestselling Israeli authors A.B. Yehoshua, Amos Oz, Meir Shalev and David Grossman toured villages in the West Bank Wednesday and helped residents harvest their olives, Israel Radio reported.

Extremist settlers in the northern West Bank have in recent weeks disrupted the Palestinian olive harvest, beating and sometimes firing at Palestinians and Israeli peace activists who come to help them.

Most Israeli politicians have condemned the harassment, but police and the Israeli army have been unable to help the Palestinians and only a handful of settlers have been arrested.
