Picket Still In Progress Against Nonunion UI Labor Current rating: 3

On the south quad of the UI, picketers still walk in protest of the administration decision to hire non-union roofers for the roof of David Kinley Hall. Mark Dahlquist, an instructor in English, writes:

I made a run to the Undergraduate Library today, and saw that Union roofers are still picketing David Kinley Hall, just South of the Library. There were several of them there, standing with large signs explaining the reasons for their presence.

I spoke with two picketers briefly, and found they were extremely disturbed and, I think, somewhat anxious about what has been going on re the Roof work on DKH. One of them told me that he had never heard of the University contracting non-union labor to do maintenance work before. He'd thought that the University had been legally required to use union contractors.

Now he's observed the University firing its union O&M workers and contracting out, for the first time in memory, to non-union construction firms. The two men I spoke with seemed seriously concerned that the UI was embarking on a long-term strategy of reducing its use of unionized labor.

You can show your support by joining the picketers.

This Disgusts Me

If I wanted to be associated with union-busting scumbags, I would have taken Supervalu's slimy offer of working for their union-busting contractor, Brisk Tarnsportation, instead of returning to complete college when they fired the entire transportation department in 1999.

As a student, as an university employee, I won't cross picket lines. There are innumerable people who feel exactly the same about this as I do on this campus. The university is simply asking for trouble by using non-union workers.

I don't think they are required to use union workers (unless it's in the contract that the university has with its O&M workers.) I know that they are required to pay those who do the work the prevailing wage, which is based on union scale.
