Due to spamming/flooding/hacking attacks on this site, we must announce this special circumstance with our Newswire. |
While we resolve certain technical issues, we have decided to place the UCIMC Newswire on autohide. This is unfortunate, but due to attacks on the website, we are forced to invoke this emergency measure to insure continued service of the Newswire.
_Please continue to post!_
We will unhide all legitimate posts ASAP. It may, however, be a few minutes, during the day, to a few hours, during late nights, before either posts of articles or comments to articles appear.
PLEASE BE PATIENT!
DO NOT POST MULTIPLE COPIES OF ARTICLES AS THIS IS AN INDICATION OF HACKING/SPAMMING/FLOODING BEHAVIOR WHICH WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.
Thank you for working with us on this problem. We wish there was some other way to maintain a usable Newswire at this time and we will restore full service ASAP.
Please remember that this Sunday's Steering group meeting at noon will have a full discussion of this issue so that you can express your concerns about these circumstnces brought on by those whose only goal is to make IndyMedia difficult to use.
Success attracts its detractors. Consider this a sign of the effectiveness and impact that IMC is having on those who oppose independent media. |

Now that a look at the wire and the hidden stories page indicates that the storm seems to be abating a bit-
Just as Mark Twain asked, in "Innocents Abroad" "Who is this Renaissance?", I ask "Who is this 'DAN' and who gave him permission to cover the Republic with his execrable daubs?".
Seriously, if one of the volunteers has time to give a quick overview of the history of the whole spamming/flooding thing, it would be edifying.
Yeesh, I don't drop by for a couple of weeks and the next thing I know there's a flood war going on.
Since you can't tell the players without a program, how about telling us the whole story? |

But the problem person is still attempting to post here daily, so I can only give you sketchy details on line. Any member of the Tech group and others familiar with the issue at the IMC would be happy to give you a fuller explanation in person.
Simply put, the current most prodigious producer of hate-associated spam on the entire IMC network chose to divert his attentions to use, because we were unwilling to let him take over and dominate the Newswire with his repetitive drivel, as he has done with much of the rest of the IMC network. We thus became a target for his ire and have been subjected to lengthy attacks numbering in the hundreds of posts.
There is no rational explanation for this sort of behavior, nor for much of the way he conducted himself under multiple names in ways that constantly violated our IMC's website use policies. He was thus banned, but thought he could continue posting here under a new list of names. He was wrong about that and will continue to be banned, although he could make a personal appearance before the Steering group to appeal for his privileges here to be restored. I tend to doubt he actually has the guts to do such a thing, since trolls like him tend to prefer living in the bowels of the internet rather than interacting with other human beings in positive ways. His modus operandi is to exploit the commons provided by IMC Newswires to monopolize coverage on certain issues in ways that are little diffferent than the ways in which the dominant media do.
Since this troll is both persistent and still active, wecontinue to be circumspect in what we place on line, so as not to assist him in identifying ways to further screw with us or other members of the IMC network. All of this information is, however, available in the local community or by attending Tech or Steering group meetings. It's not secret, just inconvenient for DAN to access. |
