University dump cleaning substance,kill ALOT of fish |

The discharge resulted from a routine cleaning of boilers at the University of Illinois Abbott Power Plant on July 11. A cleaning substance containing a high concentration of ammonia was released into sanitary district lines that afternoon. It reached the treatment plant that evening in much higher concentrations than operators had anticipated or could control. |
URBANA – When Kevin Dodd heard about the ammonia discharge in Urbana, he took his family on a four-wheeler ride along the 30 acres of bottomland he owns on the Salt Fork River near Fithian.
“When I got close to the river, the smell of dead fish was unbelievable,” Dodd said.
