Nicaragua Update by Paul Baker Hernandez
Nicaragua News service.A Service of the Nicaragua Network
New Campaign to Get Rid of US Troops by year's end, Nicaragua will have played host to some 3600 reservists, marines and regular soldiers of the United States Army. The US government has christened their presence and work, "New Horizons."
Jovenes Ambientalistas(JA-Enough!)(Young Environmentalists) isn't buying it. Nicaragua has endured US interventions in its internal affairs for centuries," said Pedro Felix Obrego`n, one of the group's coordinators. "sometimes they've been overt, sometimes covert. Never have they been to the benefit of the Nicaraguan people as a whole, and always have backed repressive minorities. Would that their apparently 'humanitarian aid'(clinics, schools, roads) were indeed 'new horizons.' Instead, just ask yourselves: Why would the US not want its troops here just now? Look around: international forces are intent on driving North-South and East-West industrial corridors through Nicaragua, devastating the already battered environment and destroying indigenous cultures. George Bush and the local elites are pushing for the so-called Free Trade Area of the Americas, there's oil offshore, and plan Colombia is in full swing. Tell us that the military is here 'for the Nicaraguan people' is to call people stupid.
"Don't take my word for it," Obregon continued, "just listen to Colin Powell: 'US military presence(in the Americas) seeks to transform the immense territory which stretches from Alaska to Patagonia into an enormous region of control, of land, of wealth, of natural resources, of commerce, of services, of investments, so that North American Businesses can act with complete freedom."
JA hosted a gathering of various local groups and activists in the Miraflor Nature Reserve, above Esteli`.
Claiming that the US had taken advantage of Hurricane Mitch to return its troops to Nicaragua sixty-odd years after Sandino had thrown them out, the participants committed themselves to develop a campaign asking the US forces be withdrawn immediately and that a small fraction of their budget be allotted to employ out of work Nicaraguan construction workers and medical personnel.
"In covering up their true purposes, the US troops are only wasting public funds and demonstrating their own inefficiency," concluded Obrego`n. "Our theme is, 'Peace and liberty-without US troops in Nicaragua or anywhere else in Central America' |
