IMC integrity compromised by FBI! |

The FBI is stopping news from reaching IMC sites and removing posts, after raiding the Seattle IMC. I've seen posts about this disappear consistently from seattle.indymedia.org, quebec.indymedia.org, vermont.indymedia.org, and www.indymedia.org. |
At 10:17pm EST a posting went up on the www.indymedia.org/ftaa breaking news page, reporting that the FBI were raiding the Seattle IMC. This posting disappeared half an hour later, perhaps due to a blackout on the raid imposed by the FBI. It was also reported on other indymedia sites, but now has disappeared from all of them. Censorship is occurring at seattle.indymedia.org, quebec.indymedia.org, vermont.indymedia.org, and www.indymedia.org.
The following report was posted on then removed from vermont.indymedia.org:
"There is a report of FBI Officers currently located within the Seattle IMC demanding the location of the person who's name is the registered name of indymedia.org. Apparently, they have an arrest warrant for Jonathan Jay because of a supposed threat against President Bush on the Montreal IMC site. They are making threats that the IMC is not supposed to send out *any* emails regarding this issue, according to the warrant. However, this, according to the IMC lawyer, is Prior Restraint, which is unconstitutional. The closest story mentioning Bush on the Montreal site is the following: story mentioning bush Please look to seattle.indymedia.org as well as other sites for updates on this situation."
And this one was quickly disappeared from CMAQ just a few minutes after going up:
"SEATTLE INDYMEDIA CENTER SHUT DOWN BY FBI AT 3:25 UT
Frickin Chickin 2001-04-21
At 3:25 UT, FBI raided the Independent Media Center in downtown Seattle on 3rd St. between Pike and Pine. They had a warrant for the arrest of Johnathan Jay, the registered owner of the indymedia.org domain name. Until the time of the raid, www.indymedia.org/ftaa was uploading up the minute play by play news of the events at the FTAA Summit and protest in Quebec. This site has now been shut down. FBI are searching Seattle for Johnathan Jay and are staked out outside his house right now at 4:23 UTC (9:24 Pacific Time). There is no live independent news coming from Quebec now." |

This Is An Unconfirmed Report |

Please note that this is an unconfirmed report. It seems to be that the FBI has some sort of issue with a story that was posted, but at this time it is unclear exactly what story is at issue. It is also unlcear what went on at the Seattle IMC, other than that was a visit by the FBI. It is unlcear whether any of the reported problems are anything but an issue of high traffic on the sites.
We'll post more when we find out more. |
Seattle IMC Raided; A Possible Reason Why? |

It is very sad that the Seattle IMC place was seized.
It seems like this happened because of heightened fears of
terrorism; and it is a fact that one area in Seattle--
the open area around the Space
Needle--was a target for perhaps a bomb explosion around
January 31, 1999.
This was the main reason why a 2-mile 'off-limits' perimeter
ensued during the pyrotechnics display at the New Year's
celebration at the Space Needle around midnight, Jan. 1,
2000; those who want to see the rockets explode in the sky
had to watch the show from the windows only. |

hey all you urbana-illinites. i commend you for on-top energy and fast following on the Seattle IMC FBI Raid last weekend.
It is kinda funny how even 10 days after the fact folks are unclear about how to characterize what happened... the Raid/Not Raid debate that is now taking place internally.
I just wanted to say 'hello!', and clarify that to my knowledge there never was an arrest warrent out for me, nor (to my knowledge) was my house staked out.
The sealed court order 'delivered' to the Seattle IMC by the FBI and Secret Service Agent did manage to spell my name incorrectly "Jonathon Jay" using not only capital letters (my name has none) but also sticking an extra 'o' into jonathan. I noticed y'all mistranscribed my name into yet another version: "Johnathan"... sigh ;)
At any rate, i think IMC is learning a lot from this recent action, and i am sure this will be re-addresssed IMC wide in a short while as more aspects settle into place. Raid or not, this is still a big deal, and it will be pushed forward with righteous energy.
Thanks for your understanding and support as we enter these trying times.
in solidarity from somewhere in Seattle,
jonathan jay |
