Tens of thousands of Israelis have taken to the streets of Tel Aviv to demand the immediate withdrawal of the Israel army and settlers from Palestinian territories. This shatters the myth (widely perpetuated by corporate media) that support for Sharon's terrorism is growing. |
The protest, organised by the Peace Now movement, also called on the Israeli Government to pursue the Saudi peace plan which specifies a full withdrawal in return for full peace with Arab countries.

This isn't the first 100,000+ rally the Peace Now + Peace Coalition folks have put on this year (I seem to remember one from maybe six weeks ago), but still it's very nice to see Israelis out on the streets calling for a just solution.

Incidentally, this doesn't "shatter the myth (widely perpetuated by corporate media) that support for Sharon's terrorism is growing," unless you confuse support for the recent attack on the West Bank -- which indeed did and does enjoy very broad support from Israelis as a short-term operation -- with support for long-term continued occupation of the West Bank, something even Sharon has said must come to end.

... because the mainstream media is not giving us such a nuanced picture. But the myth, to the extent that it existed, is in trouble anyway with the latest news of disagreements between Sharon and other right-wingers in Israel over the issue of a Palestinian state, and among political and military leaders about the on-hold Gaza action. It seems that consensus on this conflict is hard to come by, even fairly close to the political extremes. |
