YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED!!!!
TUESDAY APRIL 16th FROM 6-8 PM at THE IMC, 218 west Main st
TO diScuss how we want the IMC to reflect our wants
(food provided)
WHY? Many concerns were brought up at the IMC General Membership meeting recently, yet not thoroughly discussed or addressed (See List below). We want to provide a time to address these concerns, air more concerns and grievances (yours), and to make some transformations in how the IMC serves us as a community.
COME WITH: Things that piss you off, things that make you sad, things that make you happy, Proposals and
ideas for changes, experiences you have had at the IMC, what you want from the IMC, ideas of ways you want to be involved in making changes happen
YOU: We hope that people who are satisfied with the IMC will attend. We hope that people who have felt shut out from the process will attend. We hope that people with big dreams for changes at the IMC will come. We hope that if you have ever wanted to be involved with the IMC you will come. We hope that if you tried to be involved but felt unwelcome and/or disempowered you will come.
We will do everything we can to make this a safe space where your concerns are honored and respected, where your ideas are legitimated, and where real changes will occur with your input and/or work.
6-6:30: Grievances/ Air Concerns
6:30-7: Group the concerns
7: Break
7:15-8: What do we want to focus on? How will we adress these concerns, and
make lasting positive changes?
Please, no alcohol. Please come!!!!
P.S. If you can not attend, please let us know that you are interested; you could also send a written statement that we could read at the meeting.
QuestIONS: PLease call Becca 367-6428 or Ellen 278-2274
Thanks, Becca and Ellen

Oh, that's a nice one. Now, I'm not a local person, so I haven't had any interaction with yer IMC, but I mean, jeezus, is this not a little harsh? Are y'all growing lil' hitlers or something in your organizational structure, or is this more of a case of 'we can do it better, we just haven't gotten around to showing that we can'?
There is something to be said for process. but process in and of itself is not the solution.
Please don't take this comment the wrong way, i totally respekt the work you have been doing, and i really hope that the (obviously) sore spots aren't being pinched by my observation.
If you really have such explosive growth and massive interest in people wanting to do their own news that the 'core people' (whatever that means) are getting in the way, then consider yourselves lucky. I would think that your 'core people' would be good sources of info for the upcoming outreach campaign you are laying on. doesn't seem like this is the time to kick them to the curb.
I just hate it when spomething promising appears on the verge of some sort of implosion.....................can someone clarify without airing too much dirty laundry?

In fact, that point was suggested by one of the most core people. The problem as she sees it (and I agree with her) is that the core is approaching burnout, and that we need to concentrate on outreach, bringing people in, to the point where core people can take a break and relax without everything going to hell. Having core people be able to go away without chaos ensuing would be a milestone in creating a sustainable enterprise. |
Understood. my apologies |

I guess this is still one of the problems with text based communications, nuances and such tend to get lost in the translation. O how I wish there were an IMC here where i live, you all are the closest, and i guess i just got worried.
thanks

Notes from the meeting |

Hi, we met on Tuesday the 16th to discuss concerns with the IMC and do
things about it....
There: Avram, Ellen, Becca, Mark, David, David, Robert, Brian, Orien,
Naomi, Cope
Talked about various things, not all of which I noted..
so if you want to put more notes out, please do so.
NOTES:
Concerns grouped into three general areas:
CULTURE, COMMUNICATING INFORMATION, uh-oh i don't recall the 3rd.
Setting up a conflict resoluiton system, or a grievance policy-to prevent
people with conflicts from having to leave the IMC
An idea to have a seperate meeting not held at the IMC, in hopes that
people who feel very outcast from the IMC could feel able to attend and
talk
Changing the layout of the space, maybe for better encouragement of
use of the space, when a person first walks in and wonders:what is this
place? A library? A store?
an art gallery? a place to do email? a music place?
Handbook
Staffer does what? how welcoming should the staffer be?
Trainings as Outreach, Free, some discusison on whether trainings are open
to anyone or to members only, mostly the conclusion is that trainings are
free to anyone, with no expectation of doing work for the IMC in order to
get training
Orien would love a gender dialogue, to all the groups
No one has said the IMC is "sexist"
Everyone take note:IMC tends to schedule meetings in opposition to Family,
attendee can do 8-9 pm meetings, not 6-8
Youth involvement-
I'm here for news, concerned about the focus of the IMC/Music is media
Mission statement? a non-official one, with a 3 prong mission, also
sometimes the Seattle IMC's misison statement is used
Someone would like to have it hanging up.
Brochures, have more?
"I am in awe of what this center has accomplished-it is a leader in the
global network."
Outreach in next 6 months- how SNCC organized- getting communiities to act
in their own interest- This is something for community building, not
justIMC community
Take a vacation/ too much hold over turf/ burnout
Put public i deadlines on the lisserv
Attempts at Resolution:
David said he would work on setting up a conflict resolution
protocol
Becca will create a space for Trainings on the board, trainings
will be listed in the IMC-events list, an dpublicized better
Becca will make a more clear space for
Comments/Suggestions/Concerns?Proposals on the board (rather than under
the meetings notes)
David will make signs that tell you where you can check your
email, what the production room is, and how to get keys for it, will make
a place that lets you know how to check out library materials.
Becca and David spoke about putting together aIMC handbook. would
like a lot of help with.
******If you want to see anothe r meeting on your concerns, please
make one, or send your comments for posting at the list or on the board.
Thanks to everyone who came, and to those who couldn't make it.
sorry if there are mispellings, my email i s impossible to go back
and correct,
Maybe the changes will be slow.
Bye, Becca |
