CNN singles out China as "executioner", distorts Amnesty International report Current rating: 0
10 Apr 2002
Modified: 11:08:33 PM
CNN is reporting that China tops the list of world "executioners", but the report does not mention the U.S. Amnesty international in the same data cited by CNN reports that the U.S. leads the world in the execution of child offenders.
CNN is reporting that China tops the list of world "executioners" -- indeed, China's use of capital punishment has increased very significantly -- but the report does not mention any other countries on the list.

The Amnesty report CNN cites notes that "the figures for China, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the USA accounted for 90 per cent of all known executions in 2001."

Amnesty also reports that the U.S. leads the world in the execution of child offenders with Iran and Pakistan not-so-close second and third.

U.S. use of capital punishment has declined two years in a row, but it remains a significant contributor to worldwide execution totals.

Amnesty's reporting is about capital punishment wherever it occurs, whereas the CNN report is only about China's use of capital punishment. Would CNN call the U.S. an "executioner"?

Write to CNN and demand fair and balanced coverage of human rights issues.

Not A Great Record, But...
Current rating: 0
10 Apr 2002
China does not have a particularly great record on human rights itself. Nonetheless, their view on human rights in the United States (at the ink below) turns the tables on the US State Department, which always wants to set the US up as the ultimate arbiter of such things.

Of course, both countries have abysmal labor rights records.
