Urbana's City Council will begin consideration of adoption of Living Wage policy at it's meeting Monday, March 25 at 7:30pm. |
Meeting as a committee of the whole, the Urbana City Council will begin consideration of implementing a Living Wage policy. The meeting starts in council chambers in the Urbana City Building on Vine St. at 7:30pm with public participation so citizens can comment.
If Urbana adopts a Living Wage policy, it will be the fourth unit of government in Champaign County to do so. In general, Urbana already meets the requirement to pay all its full-time workers at least a Living Wage, but its approval of this policy will see Urbana making a specific commitment to continue doing so and to refrain from the temptation to contract-out work (currently done by city employees) at less than Living Wage in the future.
In other business, the council will consider further action to allow liquor sales on Sunday morning and will review the new capital improvement plan for the city.
You can view the Champaign County Living Wage Association's temporary website at:

It has the text of the Living Wage resolution recently adopted by Champaign County. The proposed Urbana policy is expected to be similar to the county's.

The Urbana City Council, meeting as a committee of the whole, unanimously passed the proposed Living Wage Resolution this evening (the only potential opponent may be Joe Whelan, who was ill this evening, and we are still hoping that he will make the final vote unanimous) and recommended it for formal adoption at next week's City Council meeting.
A large group of Living Wage supporters broke out in applause after the vote. The Living Wage coalition invites everyone to turn out in support of the Living Wage at next week's (April 1) council meeting at 7:30pm when the final vote on adoption of a Living Wage policy for the city of Urbana will be held. |
