ORGANIZE AN A20 MOBILIZATION KICK-OFF EVENT IN YOUR COMMUNITY!!
Goal: To mobilize YOUR community to come to DC on April 20th
How: Organize one day of CONCERTED OUTREACH and GENERATE MASSIVE MEDIA
COVERAGE as soon as possible
The Media/Message Working Group needs YOU to organize an A20 Mobilization
Kick-Off Event during the month of March!
All the information is below and attached.
Please contact Andy Burns at andyburns (at) tao.ca or 501-244-2439 if you can
organize an event.

A20 MOBILIZATION KICK-OFFS
THE GOAL:
Generate media coverage about the A20 Mobilization and hold a day of
coordinated outreach. Events are a much more effective way to get the word
out about the mobilization than having press conferences. Press
conferences are boring. No change, conflict, or personalities.
WHEN: As soon as possible! The last two weeks of March would be great.
THE VISION:
We would like to see Mobilization Kick-Off Events at well-known national
monuments around the country that embody the kind of America that WE want
to be part of (e.g. the Statue of Liberty, the bridge where civil rights
marchers got attacked on the Selma to Montgomery march, the FDR Memorial,
the place they signed the Declaration of Independence, etc.). We are
reclaiming the ideals that Bush is using to justify a War Without End, and
telling everyone that we are standing up for freedom and justice by
opposing the Bush war policy.
We the media team will email you sample press advisories, press releases,
and a press packet that you can photocopy and give to reporters, but it's
up to YOU to do turn-out (As many people as you can! Aim for at least
100!!), outreach to reporters, and organize the speakers and the content of
the event.
We are asking people to not get distracted by the corporate media and to
make sure to emphasize the CORE MESSAGE of the mobilization.
CORE MESSAGE:
As people who live in the U.S. who believe in freedom and justice for all,
we oppose military aggression abroad and attacks on civil liberties and
social services at home waged in the name of a 'War on Terrorism'; we
demand that Congress and the President instead take measures to promote
global justice in order to make the world safe for all of us.
EVENT CONTENT:
We imagine that you will want to gather everyone in one spot, preferably at
a monument or some other place that emphasizes our commitment to freedom
and justice. You will probably want to have a few speakers. And then you
will want to send everyone out to DO SOMETHING. THIS IS NOT A RALLY. THIS
IS A 'MOBLIZATION KICK-OFF'. What are your most pressing outreach
needs? What could you really use 100 to 200 people for? Get everyone to
do something useful for 3-4 hours and then regroup to report back and eat
donated snacks. We hope that you organize a mobilization kick-off that
best meet the outreach needs in YOUR community.
Some ideas: You could send everyone out to go door-to-door in targeted
neighborhoods or dorms to give people fliers about A20 and get them to
sign-up if they are interested. You could send people in groups to pass
out fliers on street corners or in shopping malls or put posters up around
the city or chalk or put fliers on door knobs or stand at key intersections
with signs. On a weekday you could visit local elected officials or
professors or administrators and ask them to sign a petition to endorse the
event. You could send people to make presentations at churches and
synagogues, or stand outside with fliers.
Get Speakers to cover our Three Main Points:
(1) Domestic - Stripping away civil liberties will not make Americans any
safer, and violates the principles upon which America was founded.
(2) International - We cannot fight the terrorism inflicted upon us by
sowing terror among innocent civilians in other parts of the world.
(3) Our Alternative - In a globalized world the only way to ensure our
safety is to tackle the root causes of terrorism and promote human rights,
economic equality, and social justice.
TIPS:
. Use visuals to reinforce ourselves as the true defenders of justice and
freedom
. Find speakers who are real people tell their stories in their own words -
people who have been victims of the civil liberties crackdown, people who
have lost innocent family members from US bombing actions in Afghanistan,
and students who are losing basic social services because of funding cuts
GOOD WORDS AND PHRASES:
-United We March!
-War, terror, and poverty reinforce each other, as do peace, justice, and
equality.
-We cannot fight terror with terror.
-A war without end sows global insecurity.
Target Outlets during March (for maximum mobilization):
1 - Indymedia/Alternative Media
2 - Community Newspapers - Weeklies - Black, Rural, Latino, LGBT, etc.
3 - Campus Newspapers
4 - Mainstream National Press (NYT, ABC, CNN, etc.)
5 - Established Left Media (NPR, The Nation, etc.)

UNITED WE MARCH: Coalition of over 100 Organizations
Announces Historic March On Washington, April 20
Open-Ended War Breeds Terror and Endangers Americans;
Youth, Students Lead the Charge to ‘Take Back Democracy’
(Washington, DC) - A broad-based coalition of over 100 progressive organizations, led by the National Youth and Student Peace Coalition, announced today at the National Press Club, plans for a March on Washington April 20 to oppose domestic and global impacts of the Bush Administration's open-ended war.
“This is an historic turning point,” said Maria Ramos, national co-coordinator for the April 20th mobilization. “People from all over the country are heading to Washington to present a vision of a world truly free of terrorism – one in which peace and the needs of people and the planet are given top priority.”
The coalition is making six demands of Congress and the Administration:
1. A U.S. foreign policy based upon social and economic justice, not military oppression;
2. Government funding for victims of the 9-11 attacks and the recession;
3. An end to racial profiling and military recruitment targeting youth of color and working class youth;
4. An end to the degrading and secret imprisonment of immigrants;
5. Full disclosure of military contracts with universities;
6. Increased funding for non-military-based financial aid for education.
"Since September 11, the Bush Administration has been taking advantage of our grieving in giving more money to weapons manufacturers, airlines and other giant corporations," said Eleiza Braun, national organizer for the Student Peace Action Network (SPAN). "This increases economic injustice and the gap between haves and have-nots – conditions in which terrorism thrives.”
More than 100 organizations, including over 50 national, have endorsed the march, with more joining weekly. The event will occur in solidarity with the Colombia mobilization, a series of events the same weekend to demand an end to U.S. military intervention in Colombia. Both these mobilizations are being organized in cooperation with demonstrations at the meetings of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund demanding grassroots, rather than corporate-driven, globalization, also held that weekend.
"Let us work toward a world beyond war and terrorism," said Damu Smith, national co-coordinator for the April 20th mobilization and coordinator of Black Voices for Peace. “Let’s invest in education and health care, instead of war – and in eradicating hunger and disease around the world, instead of war – and in our children’s safety, instead of war."

“Every gun that is fired, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed. The world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.” -Dwight D. Eisenhower
