There are actually just two contested races in this primary for county offices. For info that may be helpful, follow this link to an earlier story and comment here on U-C IMC:

For state offices, this article offered some info:

My own opinions:
I don't think any of the governor candidates are that great, Dem or Republican; they ALL claim to favor retention of the death penalty (are politicians that stupid or are they just mean?) Blagojevich is said to privately be against the death penalty, but you have to wonder when you hear that from a politician. He is a strong union supporter, so he'll probably get my vote, despite my misgivings.
For the Illinois House, the Dems have two good candidates. Naomi Jakobsson is a good candidate and would get my vote, except there is someone better: Laurel Prussing. Prussing has even more experience than Jakobsson. Plus she has the indepedence from the Democratic leadership in the state, AKA Mike Madigan, to actually be a good legislator, instead of merely a good Democrat.
Then there is Illinois Attorney General. For me, this is a toss-up. Lisa Madigan has the baggage of being her father's daughter. John Schmidt has the baggage of having done questionable work in the Clinton Justice Department. Ironically, despite my feelings about her father (how can you have democracy when one man orchestrates it?), I actually think Lisa Madigan has a better chance than most Illinois Dem politicians of operating independently of her father. I guess I'm hoping for Rebellious Daughter Syndrome to strike, once she has her own keys to office. I'll probably regret voting for her, but less than voting for Schmidt, who is a colorless, yet threatening, bureaucrat.
And if you vote Republican, Corrine Wood supports a woman's right to choose, which the other two bums running against her do not. Then there is the Rita Garman vs Dick Steigmann race for the Supreme Court nomination. This one is probably a no-brainer, unless you actually DO favor collecting Nazi regalia, in which case I'll have a hard time dissuading you from voting for Steigmann |
