Champaign County AFL-CIO Declines To Ratify Jakobsson Endorsement in 103rd
The local AFL-CIO COPE committee ratified all political endorsements from the state AFL-CIO COPE with the exception of Naomi Jakobsson for State Representative in the 103rd district.
Both Jakobsson and Laurel Prussing appeared before the local committee on February 20.
The state body’s endorsement of Prussing’s opponent had been based primarily on an unreasonable objection to Prussing by 15th Congressional District COPE Director Tom Whelan of Bloomington. Whelan had moved that Prussing not be endorsed because she had run in the 2000 Congressional primary against Mike Kelleher. Local labor leaders knew that Prussing had an excellent labor record as state representative and concluded that Mr. Whelan’s objection was irrelevant.
Under AFL-CIO rules the local group could not change the endorsement but could only vote it up or down. “A majority of the local delegates voted to make no endorsement in this race because both candidates are pro-labor”, said Kevin Sandefur, COPE chairman for Champaign County AFL-CIO.
Prussing said, “I wondered about the state endorsement since I had a higher legislative rating than House Speaker Mike Madigan. The nicest thing about this reversal is that I did not request it. I simply came and talked about my record and my stand on the issues. I appreciate the local AFL-CIO’s acknowledgement of my record and my commitment to stand up for working families.”

Three different key members of the local AFLCIO told me they very very upset by this release. They stated the local was not allowed to endorse ANY canidate for a state office by State by-laws, and not that they chose not to.
They had informed Laurel of this prior to the release, and after she made the release and said she refused to listen, and in fact keeps mentioning it in talks and speeches.
A call to the State AFLCIO confirmed they had endorsed Naomi Jakobbsen over Laurel Lunt Prussing, and the local offices were not allowed to endorse for State offices, only county/city/local level offices.

March 2) Chicago Tribune. Endorsement in 103 rd Dist
103rd District (Champaign-Urbana area): YMCA Director Naomi Jakobsson is the
more moderate choice among two lefties in the Democratic primary. Former
Rep. Laurel Lunt Prussing, a Ralph Nader Green Party supporter, has a better
grasp of how the state legislature and budget works, but she was ineffective
as a legislator and lost a re-election bid in 1994. |
