On Dec. 20 Repulicans Nick Smith of Michigan and Curt Weldon of Pennsylvania introduced HR 3598 into the House. The bill intends to reinstate the draft. I haven't heard a word of this in the mainstream media. I found it on the infoshop.org news kiosk. |
Here is the primary info on HR 3598:
SHORT TITLE(S) AS INTRODUCED:
Universal Military Training and Service Act of 2001
OFFICIAL TITLE AS INTRODUCED:
To require the induction into the Armed Forces of young men registered under the Military Selective Service Act, and to authorize young women to volunteer, to receive basic military training and education for a period of up to one year.
This bill was referred to the House Committee on Armed Service on Dec. 20, 2001.
The Chair of the Armed Services Committee is Rep. Bob Stump, R-AZ, and the ranking member is Ike Skelton, D-MO. Illinois representatives on this committee are:
Lane Evans, Dem from the 17th district
Rod R. Blagojevich, Dem from the 5th district
Mark Steven Kirk, Rep from the 10th district
Especially in a university community like Champaign-Urbana the potential for the draft to be reinstated should be of great interest. Recall what the draft did for the mov't against the war in Vietnam. |

THIS IS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!! Why are we going to force our children to grow up in a waring society? Don't we want peace? How can we achieve that when we force our children to un-voluntarily serve in the military? |
