Stop the Rodeo form being in the Olympics

SHARK, (SHowing Animals Respect and Kindness) is an organization based in Geneva, Illinois is trying to stop the Rodeo from becoming an Olympic Sport. The main tool of SHARK combined with the media is their Video Truck called the Tiger Truck.

The "tiger truck" is a large truck with large video screens on all 4 sides while the projectors from within the truck project out to all sides , able to be seen readily blocks away. They show various footage they have gathered through the years of rodeos and their treatment of animals.

Currently, Steve and his crew are following the Olympic torch on its entire route as it winds its way around the country till it arrival in Salt Lake City Utah on the 8th of February

Also, for the past several months or longer they have been working with the Olympic folks and Salt Lake City to try and prevent the inclusion of the Rodeo in the Olympics from occurring. What I suggest we do is utilize this route information and post to IMC's along and near the route and Media in general to get more coverage of the event.

The following is the most recent report sent out by Steve on the email list ( you can join the email list from the SHARK website at http://www.sharkonline.org

Dear Friends,

At this point I have no choice but to believe that the Salt Lake Organizing Committee (SLOC), and possibly even the International Olympic Committee IOC, is on the take from the rodeo Mafia. Both entities have been given overwhelming information proving that the Olympic rodeo violates the Olympic charter in a dozen different ways. They both have received extensive video and other information that clearly shows the cruelty and brutality of rodeos.

They do not even challenge our arguments. SLOC head Mitt Romney is now left with nothing to say but that SLOC has a contract to do the rodeo, and they are bound by it. Nonsense! Romney even admitted the abuse of calf roping in particular, and now claims that a contract is more important that his sense of ethics. And this guy is heading the local Olympic committee?

On January 2, I was in Salt Lake for a debate challenge we issued to the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) and two Salt Lake area columnists who bashed animal protectors in their columns. Local animal protector Colleen Gardner and I were there, and the rodeo folks were not. What cowards!

Just to make the point a little sharper, we lined up chairs in front of the reporters. Each chair had the name of a rodeo No-Show. The newspapers took pictures, and the television stations all did stories in which the cameras
panned the seats, showing the names of the absent rodeo stooges. It was a scream!

It was great media attention. Here is a Desert News website addresses to view one of the articles:

<http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,355016664,00.html>

Later in the day, I saw the newly erected PETA anti-Olympic rodeo billboard in Salt Lake, and it looked great!

On January 3, representatives of Utah Animal Rights Coalition (UARC), PETA and I met with Salt Lake Mayor Rocky Anderson and Mitt Romney and Ray Grant of SLOC. It should be noted that Mayor Anderson has publicly expressed his disapproval of the Olympic rodeo. The man is a hero.

Romney and Grant wanted to make a deal for the protests to end, but they offered nothing of substance for the animals. Our proposal was that SLOC break its ties to the rodeo. Since SLOC is unwilling to do the right thing, talks failed.

Also the same day, a letter from some backwoods Utah State Representative came out calling PETA and SHARK terrorist organizations. I publicly called on the guy to document his claims or resign. His comments were printed in the major Salt Lake newspapers. I don't know if this joker can spell L-A-W-S-U-I-T right now, but by the time this is over, I expect he will be spelling it in his sleep.

I flew back to Chicago, and last night, as promised, the Tiger Truck met up with the Olympic Torch in front of many thousands of people at Navy Pier, in spite of the Chicago Police Department's best (illegal) efforts to keep it away. The cops kept diverting the truck away from the area where the Torch was headed, but in a stroke of luck, I pulled up to an intersection where the caravan was going by, and pulled right in among with the Olympic vehicles!
The Olympic folks and the cops couldn't believe it! Call it Karma.

Donna Hertel filmed the cops' selective treatment of the Tiger. She also filmed protesters asking the cops why they were doing it, and asking them for their identification, as the cops completely ignored them. This matter is not closed, that is for sure.

By the way, earlier in the day, we were called by a Michigan police officer claiming we would need a special permit to bring the truck there. This is interesting, since I had the truck in Michigan less than a year ago, and it was viewed by hundreds of police officers in Detroit. They had no problem. Apparently the Olympic folks are now ready to trash the 1st Amendment to protect their relationship with the rodeo Mafia. We basically told the cop to put it in writing, and we haven't heard anything more from him or his department since.

Now, it is on to Milwaukee tonight, and the rest of the country! Forgive us if we are not answering many E-mails right now, as things are absolutely nuts, and the great majority of the time I am not home. If you are able to come to Salt Lake during the February 9-11 rodeo, please contact the Utah Animal Rights Coalition at 801-321-8272.

Please don't forget us when you are sending donations, as this campaign is costing a fortune, and we can't slow down. If the Torch is coming to your town, please be there to protest, whether the Tiger can make it to that particular location or not. It is imperative that we educate the country about the Olympic rodeo scandal.

We'll do our best to keep you updated during this difficult and crazy time.

Regards,

Steve Hindi
