I hope everyone doesn't drink the Kool Aid. Not everyone in Urbana or at the UCIMC believes or endorses those statements.

UCIMC was the first IMC to get 510(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit status -- a process that took about six months and considerable paperwork. A number of other IMCs have chosen to also become officially non-profit by coming into the UCIMC umbrella so that they could do things like this:

http://lists.indypgh.org/pipermail/imc-pgh-finance/2003-July/000009.html

One of the organizations that is also under the UCIMC 510(c)(3) umbrella is Global. That's why you see things like this:

http://www.indymedia.org/en/static/support.shtml

And, technically, yes, that does make UCIMC the treasurer of the Global Indymedia network. UCIMC has been quite open and transparent about it. As far as I know, nobody who's come under the UCIMC 501(c)(3) umbrella has been dissatisfied and asked to have that status rescinded.

Pardon my dyslexic fingers -- that should be 501(c)(3).

That's all fine and dandy, but forgive me if I'm a bit edgy about incipient delusions of grandeur. Sorry, but I'm inherently and reflexively distrustful of any one or any group that wants to be the "center" of anything.

yeah, like those pesky Republicans!

who woulda thought they wanted a one-party state when Bush was elected?

and a loyal opposition doesn't really count as other than a one-party state.

Nothing prevents any other IMC in the US from independently seeking 501(c)(3) status. In fact, it's probably easier to do now that UCIMC has been through the process and can show what it learned in the process.

Any IMC collective that's worried about UCIMC being the only 501(c)(3) game in town can become another game by doing exactly what UCIMC did. There's no exclusive licensing arrangement.

And in general -- since IMC network decisions are by consensus, not majority rule, unlike the US -- the UCIMC by definition cannot consolidate any power or function in any way that individual IMC collectives have not delegated to it.

(1.) My name isn’t nessie.

(2.) But that has nothing to do with whether I can prove it. I can’t prove it. So what? That, doesn’t mean it’s not true. Personally, I don’t care whether you believe me or not. If you don’t believe me, then you’re not who I’m talking to. I’m talking people smart enough to know that when something that is inconsistent with the bulk of my writing comes signed with my name, it’s a forgery. Anybody who’s not smart enough to grasp that, wouldn’t understand what I was saying, anyway.

(3.) Besides, who it was that wrote something is irrelevant. Only content counts. If it’s true, it doesn’t matter who says it, or why. The truth is the truth, period.

(4.) Later, when you encounter something with my name on it, posted somewhere else on the internet, consider that it may be a forgery. If it is consistent with what you know I have actually written, then I wrote it. If it is not consistent, then it’s a forgery. If you can’t tell the difference, you’re too stupid to understand what I’m saying, anyway, so don’t waste time trying.

*snip*

It's not about the writing. It's about the name.

*snip*

But remember, if only the content counts, and if it's true, and if it doesn't matter who says it or why, then is it really a forgery? Educate yourself. Start today.

Whoa, that was some tremor, apparently, and only apparently, erupting in the Bay Area.

Pegged my irrelevancy meter, though.

Now that someone brought nessie's name up, that means the conversation's over.

The fact that the UCIMC is a 501(c)(3) should neither be taken for granted nor worn as a badge of honor. It is due to both dilligence and luck.

Other IMCs have, in fact, pursued federal non-profit status, before and after the UCIMC, and have been denied.

We should not construe that the UCIMC has non-profit status due to being better, more cunning or otherwise more worthy. Simply, UCIMC probably benefits from its Urbana location, rather than a major city, and from the fact that no major protest or uprising has occurred here, unlike Seattle, DC or NYC.

It is good that the UCIMC has used its non-profit status to aid other IMCs. But, as I've stated on the post office thread, a little humility about this fact should be in order. I chafe at the notion that UCIMC is at the "center" of the IMC universe, and I know that I am not alone in this feeling here in Champaign-Urbana.

UCIMC benefits from unique cirumstances and luck, as much as from the efforts of the hundreds of volunteers who have passed through in the last 5 years. Let's not get too full of ourselves and let's continue to share.

I think you've made a perfectly valid point, that no single IMC has the right to try to remake the network in any way by fiat. I remember someone from a certain, uh, west coast IMC collective who last year declared its the paragon all other IMC sites should follow as far as editorial policy, that the sky was falling, and that the entire IMC network was doo-oomed to fail if we did not all fall into line immediately if we didn't adopt the same scorched-earth policies. Not only did they fail to reshape network policy, but in the intervening year their site has become a shadow of its former self.

I hope that UCIMC doesn't ever fall into the trap of saying "we are _the_ paragon," rather than "we are a model that works well."

Security Practices and Security Culture

From "COINTELPRO: The Danger We Face"

Cover Manipulation to Make a Legitimate Activist Appear to Be an Agent

An actual agent will often point the finger at a genuine, non-collaborating and highly valued group member, claiming that he or she is the infiltrator. The same effect, known as a "snitch jacket", has been achieved by planting forged documents which appear to be communications between an activist and the FBI, or by releasing for no other apparent reason one of a group of activists who were arrested together. Another method used under COINTELPRO was to arrange for some activists, arrested under one pretext or another, to hear over the police radio a phony broadcast which appeared to set up a secret meeting between the police and someone from their group.

(snip)

Using infiltrators, journalists and other contacts, the Bureau circulated slanderous, disruptive rumors through political movements and the communities in which they worked.

No it doesn't

1. 501(c)3 status means absolutely 0.0 outside of the united states. Most indymedia collectives are outside of the united stated. Ergo, you're not even remotely useful to most IMCs.
2. The fact that some imc's use UC IMC to be able to receive tax free donations doesn't say doodley-squat about uc imc's status as the treasurer of the global indymedia network.
3. If ever a proposal would be made to make uc imc the treasurer of indy global, I'm absolutely certain the vast majority of the tens of indymedia collectives I personally work with would block it.

I'm with "x"

The whole POINT of an independent NETWORK is that there IS no "CENTER"

UCIMC is pissing off people outside the "center of the global indy network."

also, before ucimc takes its place as the center of the global indy media network, they might want to see if they can get their website to work on a consistent and reliable basis!

just because ucimc takes donations for imc-tech or www.indymedia.org, that doesn't mean ucimc is the sponsor of the entire network.
neither the global website nor imc-tech equals in any way "the global network". they are just small parts of it.
