Bloomington, IN Peace Camp Needs You Current rating: 0
14 Dec 2001
Modified: 06 Jun 2002
Bloomington has many amenities to entice activists to come and join in festival of resistance.
Following the attacks in Afghanistan on October 7, a Peace Camp was immediately erected in Dunn Meadow, on the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. The Bloomington Peace Action Coalition (BPAC), as well as the local chapter of Students for a Non-Violent Solution endorses the Camp. After two months of unseasonably nice weather, the Camp is dug in and ready to wait out the winter.

Green Party Congressional Candidate Jeff Melton has been donating time and energy to the camp even while working on his campaign. A Step To Freedom, a dedicated and seasoned activist, has been keeping the camp alive through all manner of verbal assaults and the occasional rainstorm.

Everyday, thousands of students and citizens pass through Dunn Meadow, crossing the winding Jordan River to go to classes or the nearby Student Union. It is here that many of them have begun to learn that, despite the media’s polls, not all Americans favor the Bush Regimes war-mongering.

With the base camp up and running smoothly, now is the time to fill the meadow with activists and people of conscience from all across the political spectrum. The Bloomington Peace Camp needs support and it needs it now. We are putting out this Call to Action for all to hear. We need more campers! We cannot let the world continue to think that all of America is filled with blind-hatred! Come and help us fill the meadow with peace and resistance, and keep this living symbol of freedom alive. Help us show the world that our dedication to peace runs far deeper than the shallow patriotism of those who would support the deaths of innocents in the name of U.S. tyranny.

We are asking that all groups, coalitions and organizations choose a few dedicated activists from their group to support and send to Dunn Meadow. All individuals are welcome as well.

Within walking distance to the camp are the Shalom Center and Secret Sailor Bookstore. The Shalom Center is a great place for a free meal and to wash laundry, five days a week. Secret Sailor Bookstore is an anarchist cooperative where anyone can find a great book, or catch a punk show for no more than four dollars. A short bike or bus ride from the camp is the Community Kitchen, where six evenings a week a person can get a great meal, vegetarian, vegan or otherwise.

Besides camping, the Peace Camp will be a forum for art, music and festivals promoting our goals of peace and anti-capitalism. Also the camp will serve as an organizing and convergence point to send affinity groups to the World Economic Forum in New York City in February and the Global 8 June of 2002.

If every coalition chooses and sponsors a few activists to send, the camp will soon be filled with the conscience of resistance the whole world needs to see and hear. The war isn’t going anywhere, so neither are we. We hope to see you soon! For more info, or to send much needed financial support, contact Robert Kendall at:

I don't understand how anyone could not go join this camp. An established camp, in place since the first day of bombing? It's a no-brainer. I'm on my way.
I'll be there when i can.

It makes me so happy that there is a camp to hold a vigil for peace. I have been to Bloomington and besides everything that Mr. Kenadall mentions in his article, there are monthly Critical Masses held, two tree sits in the last year, and coalitions of anarchists, greens, the women's international league for peace and freedom, and so many more. Please go help out this camp. I have to finish up my work here in Oregon, but i'll be their when i can. Much love.
