[Champaign, IL] On Monday, Ken Urban submitted an application for the vacant District 4 Champaign City Council Seat. Ken has previously run for Champaign City Council Seat in April 2003, coming in 4th out of 6. In his application, he stated, “I am interested in a Champaign where council members are not only responsive to people, but proactively seek opinions. I am interested in a Champaign where it is safe to ride a bike. I am interested in a Champaign that nurtures local business. I am interested in a Champaign where there is no violence in and around our schools. I am interested in a Champaign that treats everybody equally. I am interested in a Champaign that continues to celebrate our diversity. “

Ken is Associate Professor of Computer Science at Parkland College where he has taught for 9 years. He developed three AAS degree programs and some Certificate programs in dealing with the Internet, Web Programming and Databases. Ken is an alumnus of the University of Illinois (MCS ’97), the College of William & Mary (MS ’93) and State University of New York at Albany (BS Summa Cum Laude ’91). At the University of Illinois, Ken was a TA, RA and Visiting Lecturer. In 1994, he was named to the “Incomplete List of Teachers as Ranked as Excellent By Their Students” and in 1995 he received the Department of Computer Science’s Excellent Teaching Assistant Award. His resume includes 11 years of governmental experience and 5 years of leadership roles in deliberative bodies. He is active with numerous local organizations and has donated over 6 gallons of blood through Community Blood Services of Illinois.

Ken, his wife, and 4 children are a common sight in Champaign. They can often be seen biking as a group around town. They are well known in the local libraries, parks, museums and art galleries. Ken and his family enjoy camping and hiking. They have recently become interested in permaculture and plan to build permaculture garden on 3 acres in Ford County.

I sent an email out to friends and family that live in District 4 to ask that they support your candidacy. And as I don't live in District 4, I plan on writing my council representative and the at-large members to ask them to support your campaign to fill the vacancy.

Improving the ability for citizens to ride bikes instead of drive is something people I know have talked about.

I'd also like to see more emphasis on local business. Perhaps some more family-friendly businesses in downtown to extend the area's success outside bar hours. I like downtown, I just wish there was a little more diversity there as well....

And---I'll be honest---I'd love to see a Green on the city council....

If you live anywhere in the City of Champaign, you have an interest in who's nominated and selected and you should make your opinoin known to the whole council.

If you live outside the City of Champaign, there's no reason that you shouldn't write the City of Champaign council members with your opinion too. What happens in Champaign does effect Urbana, Savoy and outlying (or recently annexed) areas.
