THURSDAY!!! HR 3005--Congress Votes on Fast Track Trade Authority! Current rating: 0
04 Dec 2001
Modified: 06:41:41 PM
Time to call U.S. Rep. Tim Johnson's office to see if he has changed his mind. He is a co-sponsor of this legislation, which will result in even more job loss in these times of economic downturn. Tell him to vote NO on the HR 3005 TPA bill!!!!
Neoliberal forces are working to invert democratic structures in the world (no news here!) This bill is designed to thwart democratic protections in the U.S. the U.S. House of Representatives vote is on Dec. 6th

HR 3005 THIS THURSDAY
Dec. 6
Fast Track Trade Promotion Authority for the President will be voted on in the House of Representatives.

Fast Track combines many bills for a Yes- or No-vote i.e. very limited debate and NO amendments allowed!

A staggering range of potential and actual trade rules affecting - * healthcare, * environmental protection, * work safety laws, * waste management, * food labeling, and even * guestworker programs, potentially turning over control of our schools, electricity, water and food to unaccountable corporations who would be pitted against our elected representatives -- trade tribunals vs local governments. (And guess who has the deeper pockets....)

Regulations for public health and welfare, traditionally administered by national, state and local governments, would now be scrutised by trade tribunals primarily concerned about finance...

If passed, the President could grant any foreign investor the most extensive set of rights and remedies ever granted to foreign investors in an international agreement,(according to the International Institute for Sustainable Development,) i.e. tools to combat our local laws against pollutants, questionable goods made under whatever labor conditions, etc.

Similar provisions under NAFTA Chapter 11 have already enabled foreign corporations to sue California and Canada and Mexico for up to $970 Million, e.g. for phasing out dangerous health pollutants, etc... - thus crippling our local governments without our being able to do anything about it...

This HR 3005 Fast Track legislation (renamed TPA, Trade Promotion Authority) is being heavily promoted by the President, the corporate lobby and the GOP leadership. It is crucial that each of us speak out and get our contacts around the country to also inform their Representatives as soon as possible about this nightmare.

Calls, emails and letters can be sent to Editors and Senators, as well as Representatives in the House, as it will also come up in the Senate.
