Ooops. Now that I've re-read the announcement, it turns out that it's not the Holocaust INDUSTRY that's coming, but rather a Holocaust SURVIVOR!
Silly me. For a minute I thought this would be an opportunity to do some activism. Now that I think of it, though, maybe Mr. Green would be interested in organizing a demonstration at the lecture, perhaps disrupting Ms. Lazan's account of her experience, to proclaim the stunning victory at Caterpillar. |

Now, be nice.
For the record, it's Dr. Green, and it's "David Gehrig," not "Dave Gehrig."

Why don't we all put our names on the list of activists to monitor.. |

It is certainly no more tasteless than Mr. Green excoriating holocaust memorials, lectures, and public education about it and referring to it as an "industry." Why are Jews the only group not given the respect of having been oppressed? Why are Jews the only group not susceptible to post traumatic stress? |

The issue is the extreme emphasis on the issue, to the neglect of many others. Where are the repeated, over wrought postings about profound oppression and human rights abuses in half the countries in Africa?
There not there because it's not "progressive" to criticize post-colonial Africa. Where is Rwanda? Congo? Liberia? Sierra Leone? Zimbabwe?
Or how about Myanmar? Or China, for that matter?
The Palestinians ARE oppressed. Israel IS in the wrong. But what raises suspicions of folks like me (i.e. members of the tribe) is that Israel comes in for, essentially, a disproportionate share of the attention. There is oppression all over the globe, but the obsession is with Israel. And it's hard to escape at least wondering if it's because the Israeli's are Jews.
Is that paranoid? Maybe. But as I suggested in my previous post, maybe Jews are entitled to just a BIT of paranoia.
In any case, while one could argue that Israel and its supporters are also cynically using the holocaust to promote their position, there is no necessity for people such as Mr. Green to follow suit. There are any number of avenues by which a critic can approach the question of Israeli behavior. Why can't we leave the holocaust out of it.
Maybe, just maybe, it's genuinely offensive and nasty. |

I've thought about this quite a bit, and I think it has to do with Israel's being a wealthy, modern state. They're one of "us": a first-world, relatively powerful nation that's supposed to be enlightened. We expect more. We're more outraged when they fail to live up to standards. They could do better if they wanted to.
Maybe our lower epectations of African nations are not racism directed at Jews, but at those dark-skinned people in faraway lands who we can't really expect to live up to first-world standards. |

A very interesting perspective, and thought provoking. In either case, there is a suggestion that more and deeper thought is called for. Part of being a credible political/social movement is consistency and the universal application of consistent principles. Thanks for the input. |
