Local Human Rights activists will be attending the annual School of the Americas protest in Ft. Benning, Georgia. If anyone is interested in joining the group in going to the protest contact information is in the article. |
>The time of year has come when human rights activists across the world prepare to congregate at Ft. Benning,Georgia, home of the United States Army's School of the Americas. The SoA trains Latin American soldiers in
combat and counter-insurgency. Graduates of this school are among those responsible for some of the worst human rights abuses in Latin America. The annual protest, which drew upwards of 10,000 people last year, is an excellent example of thousands of socially conscious people asking for
reform in a peaceful and productive manner. This year, a group of students and local people from the Urbana/Champaign community will be making the trip down to Georgia together to join in asking that the School of the Americas be shut down. Supported by Amnesty International through which a series of teach-ins have been conducted about the School, the group is entering its final stage of its preparations with the goal of arriving in Georgia on November 16 to take part in the weekend long vigil and protest at the gates of Ft. Benning. There is still time to make it on to the list of those going. Contact either dakogan (at) uiuc.edu or koonsman (at) uiuc.edu if interested in joining the protest group. |

Each year members of Veterans For Peace from the States controled by the United Corporations of America,(USC)
join the demonstrations at the main gate of Fort Benning, GA to close "The School of Assassins."
Many of us have been arrested, for trespassing on to an Army base where Latin Amerecan soldiers are trained to be enforcers of the cheap labor policies of downsized American Corporations. This year thousands of them are back in Colombia SA. where they turn a blind eye to the para military assassinations of local union organizers.
Paul Brailsford will be there. |
