Did you know that Bill Clinton, (who smoked but didn’t inhale and was a Rhodes scholar), signed a bill which denies federal financial assistance to any student with a drug conviction, even for simple marijuana possession. This outrageous legislation is called the Higher Education Act Drug Provision. It could be repealed with your help. |
Since taking effect in 1998, over 160,500 students have had their aid denied or delayed as a result of this law, and countless others have simply failed to apply for aid because of their convictions. At the same time, it is illegal to deny financial aid based on any other criminal conviction, including murder, rape, or aggravated assault.
This outrageous legislation is called the Higher Education Act Drug Provision.
In Washington -- House Bill 1184, a bill to repeal the Higher Education Act Drug Provision, has been introduced in the House of Representatives. Now is the time to contact your member of Congress and urge him or her to support this important bill.
This provision unfairly discriminates against low-income and middle class students who are unable to afford a college education without some form of financial assistance. Even worse, it punishes people a second time after they have finished serving their time for a drug conviction. To deny an education to someone who has already been punished for an indiscretion is illogical and unfair.
Contact your House Representative this week. If you live in the 15th Congressional District call the office of Timothy Johnson. 217-403-4690. If you would like to have a prewritten email or script you can follow the link to the NORMAL website.

Just in case you missed it, tapes were recently released of Bush suggesting he had smoked and inhaled. As Huey Freeman of the Boondocks said, "Maybe he smoked it to take the edge of the coke." |

Based on old news stories and some correspondence with the man, Tim Johnson SHOULD oppose this stupid law. At various points in the past, when he was in the Illinois state legislature, Tim claims he supported decriminalization of marijuana
The problem is, for all the talk, he never walked the walk. He never sponsored legislation to decriminalize or otherwise significantly oppose the excesses of the "war on drugs". So the man has a long record of hypocrisy, not action, on this subject.
I would guess this is like a lot of other things that Tim says that give a nod to liberal values. He's simply pandering to the voters so he can get enough people from the middle of the road to support his re-election. Then after the election, it's right back to the conservative crap that lies between his ears and in his heart.
This is not to discourage people from calling him on this. People can change. Just be sure you indicate that you are aware of his past lip service on this issue, that it was a reason why you voted for him before, and that you will NOT be fooled again -- it's put or shut up time for Tim and you WILL work to throw him out of office in 2006 if he doesn't oppose this bill. |

Clinton, a rightwing president, was the first sure-fire sign that the Democratic party has sold out to corproate (imperial) interests. Reading this is no surprise. |

Yes, this is ridiculous, but like the comment before me, not surprising. We've seen so many hypocrite politicians push such futile reforms in the past that it has lost its shock value. It is unfortunate how jaded we as informed citizens have become. |

It is unbelivibal what kind of law you have in America. That sounds like the stone age. I hope you will change your attitudes of smoking pot. You know it is legal in the Netherlands and it works. It does not damage your health, Alkohol does, Mr. Bush. You should know. Good luck for your campagn |

Bill Clinton is widely known as a one having an additional set of reproductive organs in his head instead of his brain. He, probably, knew it himself and attributed it to his usage of the substance. That is why, maybe, he issued such a bill. Just guessing. |

No surprise either that the sponsor of this bill from '98, a legislator out of Indiana, who is a hard-nose drug hawk, had his own son arrested on massive drug charges.
The main reason this bill will be overturned is because the law affects the middle class. If this law only affected low income and minorities, it would not be given a second look. That it hits the poor babys from the Congressional constituency will likely see this horrendous piece of garbage law tossed back into the dumpster where it came from.
Like the new expungment law recently passed in Springfield, where those convicted of Class 4 marijuana possession charges and Class 4 prostitution charges can have their records swept clean; politicians will excuse themselves and their friends for what they do. I'm sure Gov. Blago has had trouble appointing his friends to various government jobs because of some "youthful indiscretions".
Just the same, it will be good to get this monkey off of potential students. When the law was passed back in '98, I remember smiling to myself, thinking, "Now the middle class will finally feel the drug war. Let's see how they take it." No surprise they weren't willing to do even a decade of hard time with this crazy law. |
