I performed this utopian NewsPoetry song at Laurel Prussing's victory celebration this Saturday evening. I promise an mp3 of the song itself posted here ASAP. The performance includes both yodelling and an Elvis imitation, as indicated. |
Urbana, 2055
Oh, when I'm pushing 90 and long in the tooth,
I am sure I'll remember, to tell you the truth,
Councilwomen Patt, Chynoweth, Wyman, and Huth,
and the service they paid to our city.
As I sit at the bookseller's, sipping my tea,
In the neighborhood where Lincoln Square used to be,
I'll remember when Rob Scott first planted that tree--
Finest quinces, they'll say, in the county.
[yodelling solo (in honor of the Jumer's Building)]
& as I ride on the tram fueled by vegetable grease
past our one citizen constable keeping the peace
and our library, constantly on the increase,
I'll say all this began under Prussing:
I'll look out past the low-power radio tower
and the townhouses' wind turbines churning out power,
and I'll muse, what a treat to spend hour after hour
at the gardens 'round Philo Road Market;
And I'll exclaim, as I toss the town ducklings their feed
in a city that knows neither hunger nor greed
and I toke on my pipe full of legalized weed,
"Hail the People's Republic--Urbana!
Long live the wireless republic--Urbana!"
[Elvis imitation]
I'll say, "Viva, viva Urbana!" |
