Commentary :: UCIMC
What do you want to see on the U-C IMC site? Current rating: 0
23 Feb 2005
I am interested in knowing if there are some things that people would like to see on the UC-IMC site. May be this may help to make some people to calm down. May be this will help us to actually listening to one another. We sometimes do not listen. Sometimes we do not take time to know one another.
Each time I have logged onto the U-C IMC website in the past few days, I have been both excited and scared. The people interacting via the site are, of course, most interesting. I am impressed with so many points of view. Yet I am not sure how I could interact with some people, face to face or online.

So, what is my point? Why am I writing this commentary?

Well, I am interested in knowing if there are some things that people would like to see on the UC-IMC site. May be this may help to make some people to calm down. May be this will help us to actually listening to one another. We sometimes do not listen. Sometimes we do not take time to know one another.

Here are some of my suggestions for U-C IMC site.

1. It would be good if the site had a weekly or monthly calendar, clearly visible from the main page. The calendar would include events of interest, for instance. These events would be open, and everyone would feel welcome to join in.

2. It would be good if the site had more images or slideshows, clearly visible from the main page. A set of images of IMC people discussing may show cooperative thinking, reflecting, and acting. This may motivate more people to join in.

3. It would be nice if there was a way for people to log in to the system, before commenting. The DailyKos.com has an excellent system. It is freely available, as I understand. I am not an expert like everyone here. Such a system may encourage people to open up and not be anonymous (for instance, "a troll"). Often times, people need some encouraging before they open up to others. Everyone is good.

4. It would be nice to see a daily comment thread which is open for people to join in and say things of interests. In the current framework, you can only comment on the topic. If you comment on something else, then the web-editor (for instance, "ML") will delete your comment. While this is okay, it is not a welcoming approach.

And so on. What do you want on the site? Where do you want the site to go?

We have got to find a way to communicate with each other in a calm and open manner. Hey, this is our home town. We are in this all the way together. Let's make the best of it. Let's open the gates...

When You're a Troll, Bad Things Happen

For the troll, "PI/Jack Ryan" who writes:
"In the current framework, you can only comment on the topic. If you comment on something else, then the web-editor (for instance, "ML") will delete your comment. While this is okay, it is not a welcoming approach."

No, the only thing I have done is delete some comments made by the troll. If you have a concern, as has been noted several times in the last week and is always available under our policies link, you can email us at imc-web (at) ucimc.org

People can already register on the site, which helps confirm that they are a serious user and not just a troll. We allow anonymous posting, because that is part of our mission. Those who seek to exploit this by trolling can expect several opportunities to observe the website use policies, then they will be asked to refrain from posting and otherwise put on the ignore list.

Anonymous whining about how a certain web-editor makes your life difficult is very old news around these parts. Anyone inadvertently mistaken for a troll can complain to people who are more than willing to listen to and correct the issue, if it is a legitimate complaint. We get next to no complaints about this, except anonymously like the one here, FWIW. You may have been born yesterday, but we weren't.

Among the habits of the troll are constantly steering a discussion around to something completely unrelated at hand. The troll doesn't like to see a headline about Prusssing winning the election, well the thing the troll wants to do is steer the discussion to something completely unrelated, but one which the troll wants discussed instead of the subject of the article. That is why the person posting the same old-same old under several different names was asked to start his own thread if he wanted to talk about that. So far, he has not chosen to do so, but has instead chosen to publicly snipe at the IMC with the same old BS that has gotten him nowhere before.

The rules here are pretty loose. People who keep one name and pretty much play within the lines, even if not exactly, can say whatever they want -- and do. The threads on the election are full of contentious opinions -- minus a lot of troll crap that added nothing to the discussion.

It is a certain troll that has a set list of beefs about certain subjects, by certain authors, or about certain people, or just because of no particular reason except personal obsession, who is quickly recognized as the user of a constantly changing batch of screen names that fool no one -- and are just as quickly sent to where we have decided to put trolls.

Here's another clue for the clueless. Using the Yahoo account thing is a dead giveaway, so if you're going to troll, you'll need to lose that. If anyone really wants to write to jack Ryan, then they only need to reference the despicable trolling of Wayne and Anna, detailed in the Newswire item just below this one:
http://www.ucimc.org/newswire/display/26782/index.php

In the meantime, this post should be ignored, since it is trolling in itself. You've been told time and again to take it to either the Web list or show up in person for a Steering meeting. In all these months, we've had a couple of truly laughable emails from this character and no personal visits.

Jack Ryan, you're a joke, because you would have been long ago dead in any Tom Clancy novel that depended on assuming a clever disguise. It sure ain't you.

For real people, please read a little further down about how you can get involved in the many facets of the IMC. This is the way that IMC people, who are a variety of diverse members of our community that welcome your participation, empower themselves to be the media. They are the ones who make the decisions on how to do media at the IMC. Get involved to get your say. It's that simple.

Just so that I'm clear, any and all criticism of uc imc will be automatically written off as a "jack ryan" comment?

It's that kind of thoughtful self-reflection that makes imc such a valuable source of journalism...ahem...

The site already has this feature. If you're not logged in, you can click on "create or log in to a user account?" right below the navigation links at the upper right of the front page.

On the full comment form, there are question mark links that pop up instructions for how to use email validation.
Gimme a break

If I want to see something on the site that is missing, I would first try to provide that content myself.

If I have problems with website policy, I would become a member of the IMC, attend a steering meeting, or join the web group and help out.

This isn't a blog or a message board. If you want friendly chit-chat, I recommend going to DailyKos or other blogs and boards that allow for that.

What I want to see is that people who complain about having their comments deleted actually read the website policies, guidelines, mission, and purposes *before* bitching and moaning.

What I want to see is people getting involved and contributing to the IMC with time or skills or money instead of complaining about how the UCIMC collective has chosen to run this website.

What I want to see is Jack Ryan finding a new hobby other than insults and harrassment. I find it interesting that people like "Jack" have nothing better to do with their time than post garbage and harrass people who post on this site.

The IMC has an Outreach group that does work such as this. If you are interested in helping with such projects, the group would be more than happy to have your input and help. As is usually the case at the IMC, if you think there is something that needs done, it's probably because someone has not volunteered to do it, not because it's not a good idea.

Here's more about the Outreach group --
Description: Outreach developed out of a recognition that the IMC needs to continue to increase its membership base and diversity, to keep current members well informed about their organization, and to present a consistent and complete public presence to the community.
Meetings: Wednesdays at 6 PM
E-mail list: imc-outreach (at) ucimc.org
To join the e-mail list: http://lists.chambana.net/cgi-bin/listinfo/imc-outreach

I believe they have an IMC orientation scheduled soon, so drop them an email if you want to get involved or come to one of their meetings.

Anyone who wants to be involved with anything that the IMC does need only click on the Volunteer button at the top of the page. IMC meetings are open to the public and we welcome your participation. Here's a direct link:

Not sure how JR could have access to IMC UC calendar for him to create the content.

If I have problems with website policy, I would become a member of the IMC, attend a steering meeting, or join the web group and help out.

ML has frequenly invited JR, but not sure if he has courage to attend. Are you scared, Jack?

Why not? May be it is time to step into things. May be it should be a blog.

ML is to be most rewarded for his alertness and deletion of JR and other troll wannabes. Yet not sure how this particular message was "bitching and moaning". If anything may be JR wants to be friends with IMC. I'm kidding.
