St. Louis Mayoral Candidate Would Force AIDS Patients to Wear Bracelets Current rating: 0
10 Feb 2005
Pink triangles, anyone?
St. Louis Green Party Mayoral Candidate Willie Marshall would force AIDS patients in the city to wear identifying bracelets, St. Louis radio station 96.3 FM reported on Tuesday. Marshall made comments at a St. Louis Mayoral Candidates' forum on Monday that turned many heads and confused supporters of the progressive Green Party. Marshall stated that a possible solution to the AIDS crisis in St. Louis city would be to compel AIDS and HIV positive people -- mostly black -- to wear wrist bracelets.

Marshall expanded his comments on radio station KWMU's "St. Louis on the Air" program Wednesday, stating that people need to know "what they're geeting themselves into" and suggesting ankle bracelets as a kinder, gentler form of identification. When pressed by a caller to the program, Marshall denied that, as mayor, he would force people to be identified -- depsite his use of the phrase "forcing them to" multiple times during his explanation.

One GLBT activist called Marshall's stance "the most bigoted and reactionary possible -- he's spitting in the face of those most likely to support him."

I listened to the segment twice. It runs from 14:14 to 17:03. http://www.kwmu.org/Programs/Slota/archivedetail.php?showid=1621

Marshall is admitting that he did say those words, but then at the end he retracts them, and says he would not require people with HIV/AIDS to wear identifying bracelets. He clarified that he misspoke. But just the idea that he would even consider such a thing is shocking enough. I'm certainly aware that a color-coded triangle badge system was used by Nazis in WW III Germany. Apparently, Marshall isn't.
