I heard that the GLBT Human Rights bill that the 85 Percent Coalition and others have been fighting for for so long has finally passed and I gathered together this set of links as an initial report. I suspect someone closer to this struggle will write a more in depth report soon. |
Here's some info on Illinois' GLBT Human Rights law:
The Definition:
Sexual orientation. "Sexual orientation" means actual or perceived heterosexuality, homosexuality, bisexuality, or gender-related identity, whether or not traditionally associated with the person's designated sex at birth. "Sexual orientation" does not include a physical or sexual attraction to a minor by an adult.
Here's the new list of protected classes:
Unlawful Discrimination. "Unlawful discrimination" means discrimination against a person because of his or her race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, age, sex, marital status, handicap, military status, sexual orientation, or unfavorable discharge from military service as those terms are defined in this Section. |

Surprisingly, the News-Gazette has an editorial supporting this bill. They point out rightfully that this bill simply prevents discrimination against GLBT people.
Hurry up and sign it, Governor! |

I think that this bill approval is the wishful thinking of the author of this article, maybe not though. In any case, it is not solving the problem. People are not asked about their sexuality when they applied for jobs, apartments and/or anything else essential.
What they really need are rights to expand their benefits on their partners, to have rights to adopt children, by other words, civil unions approval, which was done in the USA only by H. Dean. In is the only real solution of this problem under the circumstances of the heavy religious pressure, which this problem is existing under. So, one more senseless bill, whether it is signed or not, doesn't seem to be a good cause for any celebration. |
