CALL TO ACTION: Don't let Tim Johnson hide his vote on the DeLay rule. Current rating: 0
19 Nov 2004
Modified: 11:12:03 AM
Tom DeLay, the Republican leader of the House of Representatives, has been censured twice this year for unethical activity and is now facing indictment for extortion and bribery in a growing Texas political scandal. Three of his associates have already been indicted for a number of felonies including funneling illegal corporate contributions into Texas House races. Austin District Attorney, Ronnie Earle, is widely to believed to be building a case against DeLay "Enron-style" by starting with the small fry and working his to the top.

In a move that stunned Washington with its brazenness, House Republicans on Wednesday met behind closed doors to change party rules so that DeLay could remain majority leader even if he is indicted.

Rep. Tim Johnson, (R-Urbana) is refusing to tell constituents his position on the DeLay rule and claims that he left the Republican meeting before a vote was held. Mr. Johnson owes his constituents an explanation of his position on this rule and why he failed to represent them on such an important vote.

Call his office now at 217-403-4690 and demand that he explain his position and why he dodged this vote.

As a matter of fact, this issue does indeed matter to Rep. Johnson's constituents who want truth, honesty and good representation from not only our representative, but also from all of them. We don't want lectures about internal rules that supposedly don't affect us because they do, certainly when changes may keep someone in power whose behavior has likely been criminal. We don't want speeches about bringing people to justice when our own politicians cower from the responsibility of holding one of their own accountable for his deeds. We don't want people left off the hook when they break the law, especially when they are among the ranks of those who took former President Clinton to task for an incident that, while idiotic, was much less serious than either DeLay's or President Bush's criminal acts.

To THECHIEFWILLLIVEFOREVER:

Thank you for providing an object lesson of the need to proofread.

Let's stick to the subject of the post. We and others want to know why Rep Johnson refuses to come clean about his position on the changes affecting DeLay's ability to retain his post if indicted, despite the fact that initial investigations strongly indicate that he broke several laws, and despite the fact that in the past, powerful Congressional Democrats such as Jim Wright and Dan Rostenkowski have rightfully lost their positions for improprieties while in positions of authority in the House. I sincerely doubt that your mantra about former President Clinton was "its called innocent untill proven guilty" [Sic.].

There is good reason to consider the war in Iraq against international law, which this nation's leaders, Bush included, cite conveniently when it suits them and ignore it when it doesn't. It would be worth investigating what laws were broken (probably many) when the Bush administration was meeting with now proven thieves and law-breakers from Enron to map out energy policy in 2001, yet the administration refuses to release any information about those meetings. These only skim the surface of an administration that illegally outed a CIA agent, has detained prisoners for more than two years in Cuba, and among other things has initiated a war based on lies including in public forums and in the President's State of the Union before Congress and the nation, yet is spared the impeachment proceedings that he deserves only because the GOP controls Congress. If you don't consider these criminal acts worth investigating, I'd hate to have you in any prosecutorial role.

We the constituents of Rep. Johnson have every right to question him on his and his party's positions. Since he is occasionally forthright about his positions when contacted, his behavior in this instance should be no different unless he, like DeLay, has something to hide. This is something to remember in two years, should Rep. Johnson run for re-election and should DeLay, as he deserves, be indicted and found guilty, that Rep. Johnson either backed a criminal in his political ranks, or failed to stand up to one when the opportunity presented itself. It's time to roll back GOP bullying, and the only way to be successful is to beat it back on every front.

P.S. If using THECHIEFWILLLIVEFOREVER was intended in some way as a retort to my user name, you would be better served paying more attention to the quality of your post. It was absolutely disgusting.

Being indicted is kind of a badge of honor. Maybe they should change the rule so that if he's indicted, DeLay would get promoted. He could get, like, veto power over all legislation or something like that. I mean, what the hey?

Joe:

LOL. That's very funny. Maybe he could resuscitate Boss Tweed's famous line and put it on a bumper sticker, "What are you gonna do about it?" Better yet, how about "Two presidents are better than one?"

Wait a minute, before shouting.

Johnson did not vote. You can get details about him and other House members at: http://dailydelay.blogspot.com.

Well, I looked and guess what -- Johnson ABSTAINED.

Sorry, but when you abstain on a vote like this, it is basically giving the Republican leadership a blank check to do what they want. It's a concept that Republicans tried to repeatedly pin on Kerry as an exclusively Democratic fault, but one which the Republicans are equally willing to use to serve their own interests.

If Johnson had really opposed the crumbling of what little moral integrity the Republicans still had, he would have gone on the record as voting against the relaxation of this rule.

Pass the syrup, please.
