Boardman’s Art Theatre needs your help!

In recent weeks, we have been facing increasing amounts of hesitation and difficulty booking independent films with certain film distribution companies. The common refrain is that they would just prefer to “hold out” and not give us the films we want, in hopes that the multi-plexes might want it. Even if we are able to eventually book the film, often the short notice makes it difficult for us to get the word out about the film. To multi-plexes this is not an issue, as patrons can attend any number of big-budget Hollywood commercial fodder that are advertised on every major network and newspaper weeks ahead of time. This treatment is frustrating and unfair to single-screen independent theatres nationwide. Here at Boardman’s Art Theatre, film is art. We provide the highest quality sound presentation available combined with superb picture quality. You see the films as the director would want them shown! We consistently strive to find and screen the finest foreign, independent, and art house films released each year and bring them to our community.

If you have been to the Art Theatre and have become a fan, I encourage you to write and tell these bookers that you have seen [and heard] the difference between our theatre and the multi-plexes. Inform them that you appreciate our venue and quality films that our independent theatre provides to the community. Many patrons of our theatre would prefer to wait for films to come on video than to view them at a multi-plex with screaming children, teenagers on cell phones, and an inadequate sound system. I echo that sentiment.

We fought tooth and nail to get “Fahrenheit 911” into our community, when 99% of the prints went to multi-plexes. I received telephone calls from independent theatre owners in other states asking how we did it, since only 3 independent theatres nationwide were able to get a print first-run. This is a systematic “weeding out” of independent business [and more importantly- independent media] by large corporations. If they win in this battle, they have free rein to choose what films they feel are appropriate for us to view. Please, please help me in this fight. I want to bring these films to our theatre, and I believe that it is necessary to show the bookers the community’s solidarity with the Art Theatre. There is nothing more frustrating than the thought of “The Corporation” playing at our local multi-plex!

I have attached the booker’s information at Fox Searchlight. I would appreciate if you find the time, to write her and let her know why you would like to see their films at Boardman’s Art Theatre over the multi-plexes. Please remember that she is a person doing her job, so even though nasty letters are so much more fun to write, please be cordial. And if postage is getting you down, drop it by the theatre and we will pass it on. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to email me at theartmanager (at) hotmail.com

We are happy to announce one small victory, this Friday we will be opening “The Yes Men”!!! I hope all of you can make it out.

Thank you,
Colleen Cook,

This theater is amazing and it is great how they show so many good movies that we wouldn't get a chance to see until they come out on video a few months later.

I love this the Art Theatre and have been going there for years. I far prefer to watch a movie there, rather than one of the commercial annoyances nearby.
