23 Aug 2004
On this week's edition of the IMC news, we talk with the Prometheus Radio project about a bill that was passed on thursday by the senate commerce committee to expand low power fm radio. We also hear from Scott Edwards, a Predoctoral Fellow at the university of Illinois and executive director of the Film and Humanity Cooperative. He speaks with us about what it was like campaigning in Florida during the Election Fraud of 2000.

The National summit for community wireless networks was hosted at the seibel center this past weekend August 20th -22nd. Over 200 people participated--more than doubling the goal of summit organizers. Representatives from over 100 organizations from around the
country attended, marking the largest gathering of community wireless
networking supporters ever held. The workshop panels were video- and
audio-taped and will be made available online (along with session notes,
and action plans) at the summit website:

www.communitywirelesssummit.org.

the national summit for community wireless networks is a historic event,
marking the birth of a new national coalition of non-profit and business
interests, community groups and municipalities, media activists and
concerned citizens who are all working to deploy community wireless
networks.

locally, the champaign-urbana community wireless network (or CUWiN) has
been developing a high-speed network for four years and is currently
deploying a system that is faster than cable and DSL connections and free
to end-users. CUWiN is a non-profit organization and has been receiving
national press attention for their ground-breaking work and hopes to work
with the cities of champaign and urbana to blanket the area with
high-speed, low-cost Internet connectivity. more information about CUWiN
is available on the project website www.cuwireless.net

On a side note,

Thanks to a generous $2,000 award from the Community Foundation of Champaign County, WEFT is officially kicking off a Studio Drive fundraising campaign. WEFT will rewire, replace, and renovate it's studio equipment over the next few years in three different areas.

Phase I will focus on renovating our back production studio.
Phase II will call for an overhaul of our main studio.
Phase III will address technological upgrades to our transmitter.

For now, WEFT is focusing on Phase I, and you can help! In 2004, Weft must raise $8,000 to upgrade it's back studio. The back studio must be completely rebuilt to a reliable working condition to serve as the broadcast studio before we proceed with replacing the main studio in Phase II. Plans are already being drawn up to do the work. To receive the grant, WEFT must begin construction this year. If you would like to make a donation and support WEFT community radio for champaign and urbana, you can make a check or money order out to Prarie Air Inc. and send it to
