Speak Up Now Or Forever Hold Your Nose!
Friday morning the Quad City Clean Air and Water Coalition held a press conference at the Brad Farm expressing their opposition to the proposed Stone Ridge Mega-Dairy Factory Farm. The factory would be located in southeastern McLean county, house around 4500 dairy cows, include a 26 acre lagoon for manure run-off, and require heavy machinery be driven on public roads. Also of concern to residents is the infamous history of George Kasbergen, the man currently seeking a permit to operate the factory farm in McLean county. Kasbergen’s Spring Grove Dairy in Wisconsin has been cited with 10 violations by the State of Wisconsin’s Department of Natural Resources. When visitng Kasbergen’s Spring Grove Dairy residents from McLean county found additional cause for alarm. In addition to major road damage around the site and an environmentally hazardous lagoon, residents saw cows with severly swollen udders as a result of having been injected with hormones to induce milk production several times a day. Speculating on why the Department of Agriculture has ignored the extensive findings of the Quad City Clean Air and Water Coalition, Mahomet resident Don Rolla remarked, “is appears that the Department has decided to add to its dubious record of never turning down a permit request that will add animals to the state’s total.” The final decision on Kasbergen’s permit request will be made in the next few days. As a result, Dan Rolla stressed the need for concerned citizens to act now by notifying Governor Ryan and Mr. Hampton, Director of the Department of Agriculture, about their views. Why ?
It seems as though we are always playing catch up. Why not do our home work before we hand out permits that will effect our whole community and way of life. the appalling past behavior of this mans operations should speak for its self. Dont wait, flood the State offices with letters of protest and invite everyone you know to do the same. If you need a reason look at what happend in England because of the lack of precautions. Dont let that happen here |
