"He got feet down below his knee; got to be good-lookin', cuz he's so hard to see!" -beatles.
Washington, DC -- hold you in his armchair, you can feel his disease, 08.28.01:
Today's host with the most, Essential Action's Rob Weissman, gave clear signals that today's conference was about issues, not tactics -- yet some dim bulb in the back of the room still didn't get it, and was immediately read a short, sweet version of the Riot Act (so to speak); fireworks aplenty ensued. This was one of many instances of corporate media misbehavior held in check by the stern resolve of the activists speaking at the Mobilization for Global Justice kickoff press conference for the actions taking place at this fall's IMF/World Bank meetings.
Classic moments at today's get-together ranged from some sour old bastard in the back with that old chestnut about our-system-may-not-be-best-but-can you-think-of-a-better-one, to the exquisitely long and pregnant pause following a reporter's question of whether or not it might be better to simply abolish the Bank/Fund, if they're really that bad. To his credit, Weissman recovered in fine style, holding the line on non-marginalization by suggesting that there'd be plenty of activists around to connect with if he supported abolition. |

Below will be found the demands of the Mobilization for Golbal Justice presented at the press conference above. It's easy to see why the dominant media wanted to change the subject to violence-they didn't want the essential justice of our demands to come through the media filter. ML
Demands of the Mobilization for Global Justice
We demand that the World Bank and International Monetary Fund:
Open all World Bank and IMF meetings to the media and the public.
Cancel all impoverished country debt to the World Bank and IMF, using the institutions' own resources.
End all World Bank and IMF policies that hinder people's access to food, clean water, shelter, health care, education, and right to organize. (Such "structural adjustment" policies include user fees, privatization, and economic austerity programs.)
Stop all World Bank support for socially and environmentally destructive projects such as oil, gas, and mining activities, and all support for projects such as dams that include forced relocation of people.
We furthermore demand that the United States government, the largest shareholder and most influential government in the World Bank and IMF, adopt the above demands, and work vigorously to compel the World Bank and IMF to implement them.
Agreed to by Consensus by the Mobilization for Global Justice 2001
